Two weeks ago, I mentioned that one of the ACC's biggest offseason stories would be (again) looking into expanding the conference basketball season to 18 games. For the third straight season, the current system of scheduling has been a talking point.
Last year, Virginia won a share of the ACC regular season crown with what was, statistically, the weakest schedule in the conference. This past season, Virginia Tech played UNC, Duke and Clemson just once apiece ... and that may have cost them an NCAA Tournament bid.
Now, the ACC may look into expanding the season from 16 to 18 games.
The Big East, Big Ten and Pac-10 all play the 18-game schedule and it hasn't hurt them come tournament time. The ACC is currently in a tournament funk (getting bids and winning games) and losing those bids to teams from those conferences.
Some say that adding the two extra games actually hurts the conference's RPI because it means those bad teams have to play more games, too. True, but one of the reasons the ACC continues to sit near the top of those RPI standings is because their "bad" teams are usually better than the other league's "bad" teams.

ACC Looking at Expanding the Basketball Schedule to Eighteen Games
ACC Fans Can Get Their View of the Future at Tonight's McDonald's Game
This hasn't been a great time for the ACC. After getting just four teams into the NCAA tournament, they've seen just one advance to the second weekend -- North Carolina. Clemson and Duke, who were hoping for success in the dance, were upset by lower seeded teams. Miami had a decent stay, but is gone as well.
So, while everyone pines over a downer of a season, you can still see some ACC stars shine. Yes, the McDonald's All America Game is on ESPN tonight and there are eight recruits from the conference among the 24 players participating.
North Carolina has three of them: Tyler Zeller, Ed Davis and Larry Drew II. Drew already made the Carolina faithful proud by winning the Three Point Shootout last night (by the way, current Heel Wayne Ellington did that in '06).
Wake Forest (Al Farouq Aminu), Duke (Elliot Williams), Florida State (Chris Singleton), Georgia Tech (Iman Shumpert) and Virginia (Sylven Landesberg) each have one recruit in. Drew and Shumpert will be on the West squad; the others will all be on the East.
Since 1978, only one NCAA tournament champion did not have at least one McDonald's All American -- Maryland in 2002.
Georgia Tech Guard Matt Causey Suffers Concussion, Returns to Floor Anyway
Causey is being credited for braving a concussion, but the fact is he shouldn't have been allowed to play. Concussions are serious injuries -- when you suffer a concussion, you suffer brain damage. The vast majority of sports medicine experts recommend that players in any sport who suffer concussions during games not be allowed to return to the same game, as the risk of aggravating the brain injury is too great. Georgia Tech's staff dropped the ball by letting Causey continue to play.
Words You Never Want To See Used To Describe You: 'Hogtied'
Former Georgia Tech center Alvin Jones evidently completely lost his mind last night in Tampa and had to be subdued with a taser before being finally being "hogtied" in the back of a police cruiser that he was busy doing his best to destroy. If you are 6'11" and 270lbs. you can do quite a bit of damage and Jones made sure he got his money's worth by punching a bar tender and doing $2,000 in damage to the hood of a bystander's BMW before kicking out multiple windows of a police car from the inside - including one AFTER he had been hogtied. That's impressive. The juicy parts from The Ledger's story are something you expect to read in the script of a Tarantino movie:
After officers handcuffed Jones and placed him in a patrol car, he kicked the rear window out of the frame, police said.
When officers could not control Jones, who weighs about 270 pounds, he was stunned with a Taser one time on his leg, reports said.
But that did not calm him down and he continued to battle officers, police officials said.
That's when he was TARPed, which is another term for being hogtied.
TARPed is when a person's wrists are tied to their ankles with a nylon rope, Davis said.
"That's only used on the most combative of suspects," Davis said. "It's used for people you can't control."
After that, he continued to kick out another window of a police car.
"That's only used on the most combative of suspects," Davis said. "It's used for people you can't control." You don't say? Hogtying a suspect's wrists to his ankles with a rope isn't normal in states not named Texas? As far as I know, Jones has stayed out of trouble during his mostly overseas professional basketball career - so this doesn't seem to fit with a pattern of violent behavior on his part - but something must have absolutely snapped in him last night. I'm assuming he's not reading a newspaper story with his name and the words "tasered" and "hogtied" in it and feeling too proud right now.
Ga Tech's Jeremis Smith Alley Oop
The big highlight from last night's Georgia Tech 77-74 win over NC State was an alley oop to Tech's Jeremis Smith (the dunk is replayed at the end of the clip above). Smith is no stranger to a nice dunk, as you can see here on Virginia Tech, here on Boston College and here on Duke.
NC State looked like garbage again. Brandon Costner and Gavin Grant combined for just three field goals -- and nine turnovers. State's leg to stand on, their defense, allowed the Yellow Jackets to shoot nearly 60% for the game. Yikes!
It was also the first time since 1996 that Georgia Tech has won in Raleigh.
Terps Win Over Heels Just Beginning of Upsetting Day in ACC

What a day of college basketball! Especially in the ACC. The three remaining unbeaten teams in ACC play all took the court on Saturday. Only one survived.
One of the teams that didn't was top-ranked North Carolina who saw their trouble spots all hit a perfect storm today against Maryland. They weren't hitting from the perimeter (they missed 18 of their 25 three-point attempts) and weren't tight with their defensive assignments. It hurt them against Clemson and Ga Tech, but they left both places with wins mainly because their outside shots were hitting. Today, they weren't. It was like watching the Georgetown game all over again.
On another point of the Triangle, Gavin Grant stole an inbounds pass and scored a layup with two seconds remaining to give NC State a 79-77 victory over #24 Miami. The win was the first in conference play for the Wolfpack who looked horrific in their first two ACC games and gives the Canes a two-game losing skid.
UNC Avoids Upset at Georgia Tech, 83-82
When you are the #1 team in the nation, you usually get the opponent's best shot. Last night, top-ranked North Carolina received Georgia Tech's best punch. A nip and tuck game throughout, the Tar Heels used a "goal line stand", so to speak, to leave Atlanta with an 83-82 victory.
It was close to the end. [Georgia Tech's] Jeremis Smith hit two free throws with 1:13 remaining to make it 82-82, and Georgia Tech squandered a chance to go ahead when Morrow missed a jumper from the corner with the shot clock running down.
Green was fouled by Peacock on the rebound, and walked to the other end of the court to shoot two. Only one went in, but that was enough to give the Tar Heels another victory.
The win snapped a four-game losing skid at G-Tech for Carolina. If the Yellow Jackets had held on, they would've joined Duke and Virginia as the only schools to beat UNC five straight times on their home floor.
Carolina also joins Duke and Boston College as the lone unbeatens in ACC play ... and Kansas and Memphis as unbeatens overall.
Former Yellow Jacket Arrested for Running Over Man in Israel
Former Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Will Bynum has been arrested for running a man over after a brawl in Israel:The injured man, a disc jockey at the club, was in serious but stable condition, the Haaretz newspaper reported. Bynum had a hearing in Tel Aviv and was to remain in custody until Sunday, the Maariv newspaper reported.
Bynum plays for Israeli champion Maccabi Tel Aviv. A group of basketball players were at a Tel Aviv nightclub when they became involved in a fight, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.
Maccabi Tel Aviv spokesman Nitzan Seraro identified the arrested player as Bynum and said he was at the nightspot celebrating his 25th birthday. Bynum was accosted inside the club by people who later smashed his car windows, Seraro said.
Bynum played at Tech from 2003-2005 (he transfered from Arizona after his sophomore season) and was on the Jackets' team that lost to UConn in the 2004 National Championship game. He had a cup of coffee in the NBA with the Golden State Warriors.
ACC Weekend Wrap Up: Clemson Stopped; Miami Rolls
With a few weeks before full-blown ACC play, the conference is taking a little bit of shape. Here is my power rankings with some notes about their week:
1-North Carolina: After a month on the road, the Heels came home and sluggishly beat Nicholls State. After coach Roy Williams promised to practice the team until they all threw up ... they pounded UCSB this Saturday. The classic moment was Tyler Hansbrough's breakaway 360-dunk.
2-Miami: How are they here? Well, they (unlike two teams below) made it through the week undefeated. They blitzed NC A&T with a 17-0 run to open the game and then cruised to a 31-pt win. Frank Haith is doing a masterful job this year.
3-Duke: The problem with the Blue Devils reared its ugly head against Pitt. The lack of a serviceable front line hurt them as they were outrebounded 49-31 and gave up 15 offensive boards. Plus, if Duke's perimeter shots stop falling, they can be in trouble.
ACC Begins Its Annual Slapping Of Big Ten
The 9th annual ACC-Big Ten Challenge is underway and the ACC seems to be picking up where they've left off. The Atlantic Coast Conference has won all eight previous Challenges and won 8 of the 11 games last year.
Well, it's starting again. On Monday, Wake Forest beat Iowa, 56-47 to give the ACC a quick 1-0 lead. On Tuesday, the ACC won 4 of the 5 games played.
- Florida State beat Minnesota, 75-61
- Virginia beat Northwestern, 94-52
- Duke beat Wisconsin, 82-58
- Clemson beat Purdue, 61-58
The lone game that the Big Ten won was a surprisingly close win by Indiana over Georgia Tech, 83-79. The ACC is currently 5-1 against the Big Ten and needing just one more win to get their 9th straight Challenge.
The Big Ten will have a good shot on Wednesday to make some hay. Of the five remaining games, four are at Big Ten sites: NC State at Michigan State, Boston College at Michigan, Virginia Tech at Penn State and North Carolina at Ohio State. #1 UNC heads into Columbus in a rematch of last year's wild game where the Tar Heels beat the then-#1 Buckeyes.
The lone ACC home game is Illinois at Maryland.
