Johnny Dawkins Watches Stanford Recruit Move on to Duke

Incoming freshman power forward Miles Plumlee wanted a release from his letter of intent when Stanford head coach Trent Johnson left for LSU.

He's now made his decision on where he wants to go: Duke.

The funny thing about that is Stanford just hired former Blue Devils player and assistant Johnny Dawkins to replace Johnson. Even at the press conference, Dawkins said that he wouldn't be surprised if Plumlee chose to go to Duke.

Still, it probably wasn't Dawkins who steered him over to Duke. Plumlee will have a close friend with him in Durham -- his brother. Mason Plumlee, who is a rising high school senior, had already committed to join the Blue Devils in 2009.

The older Plumlee is quite a get. He's 6-10 and has that typical Duke perimeter game of recent big men. His size is sorely needed on a team that lacked it last year. Kyle Singler did a valiant job trying to defend in the paint but he, at times, was overmatched and it took away from other aspects of his game.

Plumlee may not be ready physically to match up against the better big men in the ACC, but he will join fellow recruit Olek Czyz and Singler for what should be a much improved front line.

Coach K Told Stanford That Johnny Dawkins Is Likely His Successor

I guess Mike Krzyzewski is trying to get that awkwardness that Roy Williams had going on out of the way very early.

Last week, news broke that Duke assistant Johnny Dawkins would be the new head coach at Stanford. Dawkins was considered, by many, to have been the eventual successor for Coach K at Duke. According to Stanford AD Bob Bowlsby, Coach K said so himself:

Bowlsby said one of the first people he spoke to about the open job at Stanford was Krzyzewski and that he asked Krzyzewski about both Dawkins, who was Krzyzewski's right-hand man for 11 seasons, and Duke assistant Steve Wojciechowski.

"At that time, Coach Krzyzewski said that Johnny was a likely successor to him [at Duke]," Bowlsby said.

Coach K has at least another ten years left in him to coach, so it wasn't like Dawkins was going to get a good look at it anytime soon. I think Dawkins is a great hire (albeit an inexperienced one) for the Cardinal program and would be the kind of guy that would stick around for a while.

Well, maybe until Coach K comes calling.

Duke's Johnny Dawkins to Take Stanford Job

Duke associate head coach Johnny Dawkins will be the next head coach at Stanford, according to sources. Dawkins, a former Duke player and assistant for 11 years, takes over for Trent Johnson who left for LSU.
He inherits a team that will lose the Lopez twins, Brook and Robin, to the NBA draft, but will return its primary perimeter players in Mitch Johnson, Lawrence Hill and Anthony Goods, who will all be seniors next season.

Despite flirting with Georgetown a few years ago, many people do feel that Dawkins will one day replace Mike Krzyzewski at Duke. Getting the Stanford job as his first head coaching gig is quite an endorsement of how good of a coach he is.

They are getting a great guy. Dawkins wanted his first head coaching job to be at a school with high academic standards that also had a great hoops program. Stanford is definitely that. He's just 44 years old, so he could be around Stanford for many years to come.

Or when Duke looks for Coach K's successor.

He's also in charge of player development for the U.S. Olympic Team as they get ready for the Beijing Games this summer.

Stanford's AD Let Trent Johnson Walk

Trent Johnson's decision to leave Stanford for LSU is not just a case of a coach leaving a program on the slide for more money and a new opportunity. As Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury-News explains, Stanford AD Bob Bowlsby delayed extending Johnson's contract for unclear reasons, creating a situation in which he felt underappreciated and open to looking for other jobs.

If these reports are to be believed, then Bowlsby handled this situation extremely poorly. He said throughout the season that he would absolutely get a contract worked out right when the season ended, but nothing has happened in the two weeks since Stanford was knocked out of the NCAA Tournament. Bowlsby had several opportunities to get this deal done in the fall or during the season, but he kept delaying it and then didn't even get the work done when no more excuses could be made.

Now, it's important to note that these are still rumors. However, these rumors come from people very close to the program and have some pretty clear validity. Johnson often stated that Stanford was his dream job. It's obviously possible that he was lying, but almost everyone who's ever come in contact with the man has characterized him as a straight shooter who believes in Stanford's true commitment to academic excellence from athletes. Put simply, it would have taken a lot of ill will to get him to leave the school. Bowlsby showing no love for the Pac-10 Coach of the Year probably would have been enough.

More on Bowlsby's huge error after the jump.

LSU Hires Stanford Coach Trent Johnson

Stanford basketball coach Trent Johnson is leaving to take the head-coaching job at LSU, multiple media outlets are reporting.

The news, which was first reported by Emily Turner of KMSS TV, means the Tigers have a proven winner at the helm of their basketball program. Johnson was the Pac-10 coach of the year this season and is well respected for his coaching acumen and his demeanor, even if what got him the most attention this season was getting ejected from a Tournament game. LSU fired John Brady during the season.

Johnson has been a successful coach at Stanford but may be motivated to leave in part because next year's team won't be nearly as talented as the one he led to the Sweet 16 last year. With the Lopez twins leaving for the NBA, Stanford was already going to look a lot different next season. The new Stanford coach will have a tough job ahead of him.

Cal to Name Mike Montgomery New Coach

Former Stanford and Golden State Warriors coach Mike Montgomery will be the next head coach at Cal, Sports Illustrated and ESPN are reporting.

Montgomery fills the opening created when Ben Braun, who had been on the job for 12 years, was fired last week. Braun only reached the NCAA Tournament once in the last five years.

Montgomery was a very successful coach at Stanford, with an overall record of 393-167, 12 NCAA tournament berths and a Final Four appearance in 1998. He was significantly less successful when he left Stanford in 2004 to coach the Golden State Warriors, leaving the NBA with a 68-96 record.

Montgomery has maintained close ties to Stanford, including advising his successor and former assistant, Trent Johnson, and the school's athletic director, Bob Bowlsby. It's fair to say Stanford fans won't be happy to learn that he's now coaching their biggest rival.

Lopez Twins Going Pro

Stanford's going to look a whole lot different next season. Janie McCauley of the AP reports that twin big men Brook and Robin Lopez have decided to declare for the NBA Draft. Nothing has been specified about whether they have hired agents, but, given that the brothers are joined at the hip and Top 20 prospects, it's difficult to imagine either coming back to school.

Brook's departure is not exactly a shocker -- the Cardinal staff expected it and even (unsuccessfully) recruited players to fill his spot for next season. Brook is more polished offensively than his brother and should be a Top 5 pick. NBADraft.net currently has him at #3, while DraftExpress.com rates him at #4 in the draft. Brook is so skilled that it's hard to imagine his workouts being anything less than stellar, so it's unlikely that he will fall any lower than 5th. Both sites have him as the first big man chosen.

Robin, a defensive specialist, took a backseat to his brother at the offensive end in Palo Alto. However, his post moves have developed nicely over the course of the season, and his superior explosiveness makes some people think that he has a higher ceiling. In their latest rankings, NBADraft.net has him at #18, although DraftExpress.com has not yet moved him higher than #20.

This is not good news for Stanford. Everything they did at both ends this season revolved around the twins, but next year's roster won't have a player taller than 6-9. Furthermore, rising sophomores Josh Owens and Will Paul, the only two true post players on the team, have little experience and will need to grow up in a hurry. The Cardinal perimeter players were inconsistent this year, but they will have to carry the team in 2008-09.

Texas Takes Aimless Stanford

Forget (if possible) that Texas shot nearly 50% in the game that shredded Stanford's defense while attacking the basket. The inability of Stanford to score for long stretches in the game killed the Cardinal's chances at both ends. Ultimately Texas ran away with the game 82-62.

Stanford only shot 34% for the game. They struggled from the perimeter, they struggled inside. All those misses created opportunities for Texas to get out in transition and attack before Stanford could set on defense. Texas was able to use their athleticism to get to the basket and go inside. Heck, despite the Stanford size, Texas was was 25-43 (58%) from inside the perimeter.

The one stretch where Stanford shot well -- a roughly 5 minute stretch early in the second half -- the Cardinal went on a 14-5 run, the Longhorns found little space to attack the basket. Stanford had time to set their defense and not run after the swifter Texas guards in transition. It became a 1-point game. Then Stanford went cold. Once Stanford went back to their poor shooting ways, Texas blew them out 30-11 to the final horn.

Texas was shooting well in the game, but they couldn't have done it without Stanford's poor shooting.

Michelle Wie Dating Robin Lopez

Stanford star Robin Lopez has found an unlikely match in a girlfriend who will be wealthier and more famous than him, even if he makes it big in the NBA. Golfer Michelle Wie has found an unlikely match in a boyfriend who's a foot taller than she is.

Sports Illustrated reports (via Sports by Brooks) that Lopez, the 7-foot-1 center who scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds but was overshadowed by his brother Brook in Stanford's second round NCAA Tournament victory over Marquette Saturday, is dating Wie, a Stanford student who isn't eligible to play NCAA golf -- she's a professional who reportedly made more than $20 million last year.

Wie has always had a vibe about her that she's just a wee bit overprotected: Her father hovers around her golf tournaments, and her parents actually bought a place in Palo Alto to stay close to her when she enrolled at Stanford. In that respect, she may be a good match for Lopez, whose mom can frequently be seen at Stanford games. But with those parents and their status as two of the most famous people on campus, do they ever get any privacy?

Stanford Coach Trent Johnson: 'I Put Our Team in a Bad Position; That's Unacceptable'

Stanford coach Trent Johnson was calm and collected in addressing the media after his team beat Marquette Saturday, a victory he watched on the locker room TV after he was ejected in the first half:

Although most commentators have said Johnson should not have been ejected, Johnson made no complaints and no excuses.

"There was no profanity or anything like that used but I had been warned prior to that, and I put our team in a bad position, and that's unacceptable," Johnson said, before crediting assistant Doug Oliver for leading the team the rest of the way: "I'm very thankful and I'm fortunate to have guys like Doug."

It's a credit to Johnson that he isn't looking to blame the referee who tossed him. I wonder if he'd be quite so calm about it if his team had lost.
