Report: Dolphins' Will Allen Investigated for Pulling Gun in Dispute Over Gambling Debts

Miami Dolphins cornerback Will Allen is reportedly being investigated for pulling a gun on a man to whom he owed money for gambling debts.

Allen has not been arrested or charged with any crime. A Miami Herald report says that Davie Police have confirmed that Allen answered their questions Friday evening about "a dispute," but the Herald gives few details about the nature of the dispute.

The Sun-Sentinel reports, however, that WPLG-Channel 10 is reporting that the dispute was over gambling debts that Allen owed to another man. The WPLG web site has nothing about Allen.

From the NFL's perspective, it's the gambling aspect of this story that is the biggest concern. The NFL tells players not to even associate with gamblers, let alone get into a position where the gambler is demanding money from the player and the player is pulling a gun on the gambler. If that's what happened here, Allen could be in trouble with the league office.

One Team's Trash Is Another Team's Starting Tight End, Just Ask Anthony Fasano

The day before the draft the Miami Dolphins sent their fourth-round pick to Dallas for linebacker Akin Ayodele and tight end Anthony Fasano. Ayodele's fate was sealed the minute the Cowboys signed Zach Thomas, and Fasano, the 2006 second-rounder, hadn't done much in limited playing time. A fourth-round pick hardly seems like fair compensation, although the Raiders might consider it a steal.

Still, Fasano is just 24 and has plenty of -- wait for it -- upside. Plus, Bill Parcells, who drafted him in Dallas, obviously has an affinity for former players, particularly those he still thinks can play. And unlike Dallas, where Jason Witten is firmly entrenched as the starter, Fasano has a good chance to win the job in Miami. From the Sun-Sentinel's Omar Kelly:
Fasano has started 11 games in his two seasons as a Cowboy, which gives him an experience edge over every tight end on the roster except David Martin, who contributed a career-high 34 receptions last season but was a suspect blocker. Fasano likely wins the spot if he can catch AND block effectively.
Of course, teams like to sometimes feature multiple tight ends, which makes it even more curious that Fasano couldn't get on the field in Dallas. But the Dolphins, fresh off a one-win effort in 2007, aren't the Cowboys, and that looks to be swell news for Fasano. Now the team just needs to decide on a quarterback.

Miami Dolphins Waive Drew Mormino After He Fails Physical

The Miami Dolphins waived offensive lineman Drew Mormino after he failed a physical. Mormino, a sixth round pick last year, spent all of the 2007 season on Injured Reserve with a torn labrum.

One thing it means ... according to The Phinsider ... that #1 overall pick Jake Long will be able to wear jersey #77. Long wore that number at Michigan; Mormino was assigned that number with the Dolphins.

It also means that the Dolphins will have a very, very, very young offensive line. Long, a rookie, will be planted in as the left tackle. Fourth round pick Shawn Murphy could be the starting right guard. Next to him is center Samson Satele -- a second year player. Sixth round pick Donald Thomas could fight Murphy for a starting gig or, at least, figure in as a backup on the interior of the line. Second year player Ikechuku Ndukwe could factor in as well.

Expect Miami to take a gander at a veteran free agent before camp starts in July.

Ricky Williams Wishes He Had Been on Cedric Benson's Boat: 'I Have a Calming Influence'

The University of Texas has had two Heisman Trophy winners, Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams. Both of them expressed opinions recently on the legal situation involving another former Longhorn, Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson. We'll start with Williams because his comments are funnier.

After Williams told the Austin American-Statesman that Benson invited him to the boat party at which Benson was arrested for boating while intoxicated, Williams said he's sorry he declined the invitation. Williams said that if he had been there, he has a feeling that none of this would have happened:
"I think if I had come down, things might have worked out a little bit differently," Williams said Wednesday. "I find I have a calming influence on people I'm around."
Yes, Ricky, we know all about your calming influence.

Dolphins Lead the League in Mormons

The Miami Dolphins tied an NFL record for losses in a season last year, with 15. They may be looking to break a record for Mormons on a team this year, with six.

Of course, the NFL Record & Fact Book doesn't actually list "Most Mormons, Season" as an official record, but Dick Harmon of the Deseret News (a paper owned by the Mormon church) reports that if it were an official record, the Dolphins would be going for it:
As the Dolphins began rookie mini camps and camps for veterans, there are six members of the LDS faith on the team right now, including a trio of veterans, quarterback John Beck (BYU), John Denney (BYU) and Sampson Satele (Hawaii) Steve Fifita (Utah), who was cut and picked up by New England, would have been the seventh, had he stayed on the roster.

The others are Utah State offensive lineman Shawn Murphy, son of former Atlanta Brave star Dale Murphy, who was drafted in the fourth round by Miami, No. 115 overall; free agent signee Kelly Poppinga (BYU) and free agent receiver Devone Bess (Hawaii), who was thought to be taken in the fifth round by Miami but was picked up after the draft.
And as Matt Sussman at Sports By Brooks notes, the Dolphins are so desperate at quarterback, Ty Detmer could be next.

Dolphins QB Chad Henne Has Rough Practice, Forced to Run Laps

It seems like just two days ago that we were discussing Chad Henne's prospects of winning the starting job in Miami. It made sense at the time; he'd taken part in one full day of minicamp. After yesterday's practice, however, John Beck's not-so-firm status as the team's No. 1 quarterback seemed suddenly less tenuous.
Dolphins rookie quarterback Chad Henne seemed to be working on mental overload as he wrapped up the final practice of the three-day rookie minicamp Sunday.

At one point, he was told to run a lap after blowing an assignment. "I forgot the snap count," said Henne, the 57th overall draft pick. "I went on one instead of our second count. I deserved it."
Brilliant. Henne added that the last time he had to run laps was in high school for cursing. Presumably, he also had to wash his mouth out with soap afterwards.

That Henne struggled isn't really news; he was drafted last weekend, and he's having to learn an entirely new (and much more complex) offense, with a bunch of guys he's never seen before (save Jake Long).
"We threw a lot at [Henne]," coach Tony Sparano said. "We wanted to see exactly how much sticks. He might've struggled just a little bit, but I thought he threw the ball pretty well at times."
These experiences will all help make Henne a better player, and you have to wonder where Keith Traylor might be right now if Cam Cameron had forced him to run laps instead of just suspending him after a game of dominoes went horribly awry.

Bill Parcells Still Loves Bobby Carpenter

When he was the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, Bill Parcells made the call to pick Ohio State linebacker Bobby Carpenter in the first round of the 2006 draft. Parcells loved Carpenter and viewed him as the typical "Parcells guy," just as Carpenter's father, former New York Giants fullback Rob Carpenter, had been a generation before.

However, not many Cowboys fans love Carpenter. You can't exactly call Carpenter a bust, but he's only started one game in his two seasons in Dallas, and he's not expected to start this year, either. He's OK on special teams, but when the best you can say about a player after two years is "OK on special teams," that's disappointing for a first-round pick.

But Parcells still loves Carpenter. The Star-Telegram reports that Parcells attempted to get the Cowboys to trade Carpenter to the Dolphins before the draft. And in a sign that the Cowboys still see some potential in Carpenter, they said no.

I'm skeptical that Carpenter will ever be a good NFL linebacker, but if a football man as astute as Parcells likes him -- and if the Cowboys still want him -- he obviously has potential.

If Minicamp Was the Regular Season, Chad Henne Would Be Dan Marino

Bill Parcells didn't use a second-round pick on Chad Henne to sit him on the bench. At least not without giving him a legit shot to win the starting job. Often, when teams draft a quarterback, the plan is to have them redshirt their rookie season to learn the offense. Unlike most situations, however, the Dolphins lost 15 times last year; things are a little more urgent than they might be elsewhere.

Which is why Henne has a chance to win the starting job. It's May, of course, and the depth chart might as well be written in pencil, but minicamps have begun and it's football. And even the flag football version -- shorts, t-shirts, no pads -- is enough to feed speculation about which player should play where in four months. So, naturally, first-year head coach Tony Sparano was asked about Henne's chances of winning the job after one the first day of minicamp.
'We have a quarterback competition here,'' Sparano said. ``So from that standpoint, at the end of this, we're going to find out who the best quarterback is. If it's Chad, it's Chad. If it's Beck, it's Beck. If it's McCown, it's McCown.''

'I was pleasantly surprised and happy with what he did, especially from a mental standpoint,'' the coach said. ``With a quarterback, it's all about what he does in the huddle. It's how he takes control and how he does some of those things. Chad was very good that way today. He took control of the huddle."
After Minicamp: Day 1, John Beck and Josh McCown have a slight edge over Henne. This will no doubt change countless times between now and September, and there's a good chance all three quarterbacks see the field in 2008. Jake Long can't block everybody.

Jason Taylor Dances to Monday Night Football Theme on 'Dancing With the Stars'

This is just weird:

That was Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor's performance during the Latin round on Dancing With the Stars last night, dancing to the Monday Night Football theme song. I can understand, I guess, the choice of song, even if I don't really think "Latin" when I hear the first four notes of the MNF theme. But did Taylor really need to wear the eye black? That just looked stupid.

Taylor is currently in first place on the show, ahead of Olympic figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi.

NFL Draft Grades: Miami Dolphins

Miami Dolphins 2008 Draft Picks:

Round 1 (1): Jake Long, OT, Michigan
Round 2 (32): Phillip Merling, DE, Clemson
Round 2 (57): Chad Henne, QB, Michigan
Round 3 (66): Kendall Langford, DE, Hampton
Round 4 (110): Shawn Murphy, G, Utah State
Round 6 (176): Jalen Parmele, RB, Toledo
Round 6 (195): Donald Thomas, G, UConn
Round 6 (204): Lex Hilliard, RB, Montana
Round 7 (245): Lionel Dotson, DT, Arizona

The Good: Jake Long was the smart/safe pick. He should anchor that line for the next decade and enable them to develop their offense (whenever they get that). Passing on Chris Long, Miami still was able to get Merling at the top of the second round. Henne may not be a stud QB ... but he was a nice value pick that gives Miami another option if they think Beck doesn't work out. Hmmm. Michigan QB and Michigan OT? Murphy seems to be a project, but one that could really pay off. Hilliard could be their fullback.

The Bad: Not much. Sure, the late round picks all seem to be projects ... but aren't they all? Also, Miami needs some receivers and secondary help yet drafted none. There is also the lingering anxiety over the Jason Taylor situation since rumors swirled that he had been dealt to Tampa (he wasn't). I think the worst thing about this draft was that it slammed last year's draft. Dealing Lorenzo Booker and drafting (seemingly) Beck's replacement shows little confidence of the Cam Cameron era decisions.

The Grade: A-. This team needed everything and they drafted a little bit of everything. I haven't even mentioned that they used a fourth round pick in a deal for Anthony Fasano and Akin Ayodele. That is probably two starters off of one mid round pick. Not bad at all.
