The Washington Redskins have placed WR/KR Jerome Mathis on waivers. After the draft, it was obvious that Mathis ... who signed with Washington on April 4th ... didn't have a good shot at sticking with the team.
At the draft, the Redskins drafted recievers Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly. Both would've pushed Mathis down on the receiving depth chart. Mathis' return duties took a hit with the drafting of Thomas (who could find a nice role there) and cornerback J.T. Tryon.
Second off, Mathis has had some troubles with Johnny Law of late, which didn't make his signing very tantalizing in the first place. One was for mishandling his pit bulls ... and the second was for punching his common-law wife.
All this could mean that Mathis' NFL career may come to a halt. Depite being a Pro-Bowl player in his rookie season (2005), he wasn't highly sought after during free agency and may have trouble landing a new gig.

Redskins Letting Jerome Mathis Go
Fifth Person Charged For the Murder of Redskins' Sean Taylor

We just learned that the four young men who are being charged with murdering Sean Taylor will not face the death penalty. Now comes word that there will be a fifth man charged in the crime.
Miami-Dade County State Attorney's Office spokesman Ed Griffith says Wednesday that 16-year-old Timothy Brown is charged with first-degree murder. He is also charged with armed burglary of an occupied dwelling.
Brown also won't face the death penalty.
Currently, Brown is sitting in jail in Lee County, FL and it isn't known when he will be moved to Dade County. It has been rumored for quite some time that police were looking at a fifth suspect in the killing of Taylor, a safety for the Washington Redskins. Taylor died from massive bleeding of a gunshot wound during a robbery gone bad (when do they ever "gone good"?)
The trial for the other four accused is August 25th.
Sean Taylor Murder Suspects Won't Face the Death Penalty
Jason Scott Mitchell, Eric Rivera Jr., Venjah Hunte and Charles Wardlow are being charged with the burglary and murder of the Redskins' Sean Taylor. However, none of them will be facing the death penalty. "They would have had to show it was premeditated," (Huerte's attorney Michael) Hornung said. "I believe that it's appropriate that they waive the death penalty."
The current theory of the crime, that Rivera was the alleged shooter, likely prevented prosecutors from seeking the death penalty since Rivera was a minor at the time of the shooting.
"The fact that the prosecution won't seek the death penalty has been a foregone conclusion," Taylor family spokesman Richard Sharpstein told the Fort Myers News Press. "The family is still supporting the prosecutors and looking for justice to be done."
It should make closure a bit easier, as a death penalty sentence would've made the trial a bit more trying. Since Rivera was a minor at the time of the murder, he can't get the death penalty under Florida law. The other three (who were legally adults at the time) could have been sentenced to death ... but it would have looked bad that the shooter doesn't get sent to death row but his accomplices do.
Giants Rookie Kenny Phillips to Wear Tiki's #21 ... to Honor Sean Taylor
When I say "who wears #21 for the New York Giants" ... your response will most likely be retired running back Tiki Barber. Well, not anymore.
Rookie safety Kenny Phillips will be wearing that number (well, he at least was during the rookie minicamp). Interesting that the team just gives away the jersey number of their all-time rushing and receptions leader just one year after he retires. Sure, most NFL teams don't retire numbers often ... many do choose not to issue those numbers to just anyone at anytime.
However, Phillips isn't wearing it to honor or slight Tiki. He's doing it to honor fellow Miami Hurricanes safety, the late Sean Taylor.
"He was a guy who my whole career, even in high school, I had pictures of him in my locker," Phillips said. "I wanted to get a chance to meet him, and I never did. I watch him on film and he was just an exceptional athlete. The plays he made were crazy. I just wanted to pay my respects by having his number and trying to live up to that."
Awesome gesture by Phillips who could be the first of several Canes players that may do the same. Taylor was beloved by his teammates and someone that younger guys were in awe of.
Phillips, who was drafted with the final pick of the first round, will hope to become the next in a line of outstanding Miami safeties: Taylor, Baltimore's Ed Reed and New England's Brandon Meriwether.
Redskins' Zorn 'Excited' About Jason Campbell's Hamstring Injury
It is a bit unusual when a head coach is actually pleased when he starting quarterback gets hurt. Well, that just happened in Washington as new coach Jim Zorn isn't too bummed about QB Jason Campbell tweaking his hamstring during practice. "He was feeling his hamstrings all along, and I think it was because I have him sinking down a little bit," Zorn said. "It's the change. I was kind of excited about it. Not that I wanted him to tweak his hamstring, just the fact that different things are happening to his body. He's going to be fine."
Zorn was a quarterbacks coach (uh, and a quarterback) so I'm sure he sees the bumps and bruises as a sign of Campbell following his direction. One of the most important keys in the 2008 season for the Skins is how Campbell performs in the new West Coast Offense.
However, it isn't encouraging to see the Redskins' skill players dropping like flies. Campbell's hammy will hurt his development in the new offense. Running back Clinton Portis hurt his hip in a race against LaRon Landry; Antwaan Randle El had surgery to remove some cartilage from his knee.
Chris Cooley Explains NFL Drug Testing
Washington Redskins tight end Chris Cooley is blogging about life in the NFL for Yahoo, and today he provides something that a lot of fans will find interesting: Details on what it's like for NFL players to get drug tested.Cooley gets right down to business and pulls no punches, informing us in the first sentence of his blog post that the drug tester, named Bill, "stares at my penis" while Cooley provides the necessary urine sample. More from Cooley's blog:
Cooley's post mostly takes a lighthearted approach, but I think there are legitimate privacy concerns for athletes and other people who work in jobs that require random drug tests. Cooley doesn't make it sound pleasant.Earlier that morning, I'd made over 10 phone calls to three different people arranging the final details of my afternoon meeting. After meeting up with Bill, we wasted no time as we casually strolled through the men's room doors. The two of us snuck quickly past the corridor of urinals toward the last stall -- our best bet for going unnoticed. Luckily it was unoccupied, and we moved right in.
Not many words were said in the stall. Both of us were completely comfortable with the procedure. Bill took out the package, but I was the one who had to break the seal. I ripped open the plastic container, revealing a short plastic cup to capture my random urine sample.
Fred Davis Needs Captain Chaos as a Mentor

So, yeah, Redskins rookie tight end Fred Davis likes to sleep. Unfortunately, his raging case of narcolepsy struck during last weekend's minicamp. This is generally frowned upon, particularly when starting a new job.
The Washington Post's Jason Reid writes that "some draft evaluators reported that USC tight end Fred Davis exhibited poor work habits and made questionable decisions at times." The Redskins considered him too much of a talent to pass up, and three days into his NFL career, Davis missed practice. The team reported that Davis had overslept, and his brother, Kedran, confirmed as much ... before adding: that he overslept after a late night on Saturday.
Front-office bigwig Vinny Cerrato, the man responsible for drafting Davis*, isn't worried:
"The biggest thing is, as long as they learn from their mistakes, that's the biggest thing," Cerrato said. "The kid felt awful. Jim got a chance to talk to him and Jim's handling it internally. I've talked to his agents and the kid feels horrible, which he should. In the scheme of things, this is nothing. Of course, that's what people said when Brandon Lloyd first starting acting out. If there's a lesson in all of this, it's this: make Davis start a blog. It builds character.
"Anytime you miss anything, to me it's important. Especially when you're here to ... he's making his first impression. Do what's right. He made a mistake. Now, he's got to fight back from the mistake."
* possibly not entirely true
Colt Brennan (Wrongly) Thinks He Lost Millions by Returning for Senior Season

The Washington Redskins took Colt Brennan with the 186th pick in last weekend's draft. He was the tenth quarterback selected, and although Brennan seemed like a potential franchise player last fall, he'll struggle to make the 53-man roster behind Jason Campbell and Todd Collins. So what happened? According to the Honolulu Advertiser, it was all about timing:
The former University of Hawai'i quarterback's decision to return for his senior season will cost him about $1,378,500 over a three-year period.Brennan confirms as much, and his college coach, June Jones, suggested that by returning for his senior season, Brennan was turning down $25 million.
Brennan, who was projected to be a first- or second-round pick after the 2006 season, saw his value drop after a poor outing in the Sugar Bowl, an illness that caused his weight to drop to 185 at the Senior Bowl, and a recent hip surgery
NFL Draft Grades: Washington Redskins
Washington Redskins 2008 Draft Picks:Round 2 (34): Devin Thomas, WR, Michigan State
Round 2 (48): Fred Davis, TE, Southern Cal
Round 2 (51): Malcolm Kelly, WR, Oklahoma
Round 3 (96): Chad Rinehart, G, Northern Iowa
Round 4 (124): Justin Tryon, CB, Arizona State
Round 6 (168): Durant Brooks, P, Georgia Tech
Round 6 (180): Kareem Moore, S, Nicholls State
Round 6 (186): Colt Brennan, QB, Hawaii
Round 7 (242): Rob Jackson, DE, Kansas State
Round 7 (249): Christopher Horton, S, UCLA
The Good: The Redskins had been in the hunt for a big receiver (Chad Johnson, Roy Williams, Anquan Boldin) but haven't been successful prying one away. Instead of drafting one at #21, they moved back to the second round and picked two of the biggest receivers in the draft -- Thomas and Kelly. Both will prove to be major parts of Washington's future plans and important cogs of the West Coast Offense. Davis and Rinehart have a great chance to push for backup roles and a nice future. Tryon should make the team as a nickel back with all the secondary problems. Even the safeties Moore and Horton have shots to make the team.
The Bad: Drafting a punter is always weird. Brooks was the Ray Guy Award winner (best college punter) which means he's pretty good. Current starter Derrick Frost has been put on notice. I like Brennan at Hawaii. I'm not so sure I like him with the Redskins. He's got health issues and questions about his arm strength ... not something I like when you are backing up the cannon Jason Campbell has. Also, the team neglected to add anything at the defensive line.
The Grade: A-. For a franchise that typically doesn't have many draft picks, they worked this draft extremely well. Washington traded back a few times and still got exactly what they wanted. They didn't address the defensive line ... but maybe they will look there via trade or free agency.
Colt Brennan Goes to Washington ... to Back Up Jason Campbell and Todd Collins
A confluence of events torpedoed Colt Brennan's draft prospects -- a horrid Sugar Bowl (which wasn't entirely his fault) and some subpar off-season workouts -- but he's now been drafted in Round 6, some three or four rounds later than a lot of folks anticipated back in the fall, which is something Andre Woodson still can't say.
Brennan's new employer: the Washington Redskins, who took Carson Palmer's brother (now his legal name) on Day 2 last season (that obviously didn't work out). Jason Campbell is the starter (head coach Jim Zorn said so!) and Todd Collins is firmly entrenched as the backup, but Collins, who came into the league when Brennan was seven, can't play forever.
So what does this pick mean? Well, that Brennan will be battling for a roster spot, and best case, eventually graduate to Jason Campbell-backup status. No way that happens in 2008 -- the West Coast Offense isn't something you pick up while you're waiting for Domino's to show up -- or, hell, 2009, but I'm guessing that was the thinking behind the selection.
So what does NFL Network's Mike Mayock think?
Pros: "Slides naturally in the pocket, finds throwing lanes, in-breaking routes he does a great job on."Mayock adds that Brennan will go on injured reserve, and that he's a developmental prospect. So, yeah, maybe the 'Skins should've held onto Carson Palmer's brother.
Cons: "Anytime he has to drive the football to the outside of the numbers, he will struggle; he looks like a centerfielder crow hopping to throw the football home.
He's also had well-documented off-field issues; he didn't deal with them very well at the Senior Bowl and [NFL] Combine ... but I will say that getting hurt didn't hurt him."
