Redskins Need to Break Camp Now; Devin Thomas Latest to be Injured

Another day, another practice, another injury for the Washington Redskins.

After losing Phillip Daniels and Alex Buzbee for the season ... and Fred Smoot for a week or so ... now top draft pick Devin Thomas pulls a hamstring and is carted off the field.
Coach Jim Zorn says the team doesn't immediately know the extent of the injury.

Thomas was hurt Thursday while reaching over his head to catch a pass from quarterback Jason Campbell during 11-on-11 drills.

Washington also lost another defensive end ... Chris Wilson ... to a calf injury. Oh, and Clinton Portis probably won't play in the Hall of Fame game next week after turning his ankle. Pro-Bowler Chris Samuels is missing practices due to his surgically repaired shoulder acting up while Antwaan Randle El and Santana Moss aren't practicing either. And the batcave has been destroyed!

Zorn must feel like he's in a daze with all these injuries piling up around him. In the NFL, these things happen and there is always one team that seems to get bit hard in the preseason. This year, it looks like it is the "Z-man's" team.

Wooing Brett Favre: 'Follow Lombardi's Footsteps to the Nation's Capital'

With Brett Favre's Packer career possibly over, FanHouse is looking at possible destinations for the Pro Bowler. Next up: the Washington Redskins.

Dear Brett Favre,

You have a big name, a big arm and the media will be all over you. I'd be willing to bet that Redskins' owner Daniel Snyder is beating your door down.

I know that the Redskins already have Jason Campbell, but when has Snyder ever let an opportunity to push aside the future for the buzzworthy name? Stever Spurrier, Bruce Smith and Deion Sanders can tell you that. Dude went after a flailing Tom Cruise, for crying-out-loud!

Unlike some other destinations, the Skins aren't a lost cause. They were a playoff team a year ago despite losing some very, very close games and facing some very, very difficult situations. A guy like you could tighten it up. After all, the Redskins are installing a West Coast Offense that was designed by Mike Holmgren -- your former coach at Green Bay. You'd have speedsters Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle-El at your disposal ... as well as TE Chris Cooley and some promising rookie receivers.

Washington likes old guys. Most of the government is filled with them. The Redskins also have quite the history of old guys on their team. Remember the Over-The-Hill Gang of the 1970s?

Hmmm. The Redskins of the 70s? There was another famous Green Bay Packer that found his way to Washington after he briefly retired from the Packers. Some guy named Vince Lombardi.

If it was good enough for him, it is good enough for you!

Redskins' Zorn 'Excited' About Jason Campbell's Hamstring Injury

It is a bit unusual when a head coach is actually pleased when he starting quarterback gets hurt. Well, that just happened in Washington as new coach Jim Zorn isn't too bummed about QB Jason Campbell tweaking his hamstring during practice.
"He was feeling his hamstrings all along, and I think it was because I have him sinking down a little bit," Zorn said. "It's the change. I was kind of excited about it. Not that I wanted him to tweak his hamstring, just the fact that different things are happening to his body. He's going to be fine."

Zorn was a quarterbacks coach (uh, and a quarterback) so I'm sure he sees the bumps and bruises as a sign of Campbell following his direction. One of the most important keys in the 2008 season for the Skins is how Campbell performs in the new West Coast Offense.

However, it isn't encouraging to see the Redskins' skill players dropping like flies. Campbell's hammy will hurt his development in the new offense. Running back Clinton Portis hurt his hip in a race against LaRon Landry; Antwaan Randle El had surgery to remove some cartilage from his knee.

Methinks the Redskins are Out of the Chad Johnson Sweepstakes

Last week, reports came out that the Redskins offered two draft picks to the Bengals for Chad Johnson. Cincinnati shot it down.

After Day 1 of the NFL Draft, it doesn't seem that the Redskins will revisit those talks.

The Skins draft out of the first round, netting three second round picks and used all three on receiving threats: WRs Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly and TE Fred Davis.

Thomas and Kelly are those big possession type receivers that Washington was looking to vault their new West Coast Offense. Both are strong, great hands, can break tackles and make big plays. Ya know, things we were looking for in Chad Johnson.

As Hogs Haven points out, this should help QB Jason Campbell out tremedously. He now has three big targets to look at the ability to spread this team out to four or five wideouts (Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle-El are no slouches). Davis projects to be like a Chris Cooley type player which gives Washington the ability to use two tight ends in the running game.

FanHouse Mock Draft: Washington Redskins Select Malcolm Kelly No. 21

With each pick of the FanHouse mock draft, we get into the head of an NFL general manager and let you know who he'll pick and why.

With the first pick in the Jim "Z-man" Zorn era, the Redskins will look for a receiver. Currently, the Skins have two fast receivers who are excellent in the open field ... but lack the kind of move-the-chains guy you need in the West Coast Offense.

Enter Malcolm Kelly. Kelly is big (6'4, 220 lbs), has great hands and has the ability to break tackles and turn a 7-yard slant into a 50-yard TD.

Remember that Washington's QB is Jason Campbell, who has just about one season worth of starts under his belt. Having a big target like Kelly who can catch bad passes is quite a find. Imagine adding a guy like Kelly to a receiving unit that has Santana Moss, Antwaan Randle El and Chris Cooley ... with Clinton Portis coming out of the backfield.

Did I mention Portis? Kelly is an outstanding blocker in the Hines Ward mold who is sure to help the Redskins running game.

Steelers to Rest Everybody, Young Guys Get a Chance to Earn Jobs for '08

With the AFC North wrapped up and absolutely nothing to play for, it makes sense that the Steelers would rest some of their starters.

Four of them, to be exact. In today's preseason J.V. matchup with the Ravens, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be the third quarterback (behind Charlie Batch and Brian St. Pierre), and the following players won't waste the effort putting on pads: wide receiver Hines Ward, safety Troy Polamalu, and returner Allen Rossum. Tackle Marvel Smith had back surgery earlier in the week, and running back Willie Parker was placed on injured reserve earlier this week with a broken leg.

While a win or loss doesn't affect Pittsburgh's postseason positioning, it will be a good opportunity for many of the young players on the roster. Rookie undrafted free agent running back Gary Russell could see a lot of action; Parker showed he was a big-play back during Week 17 of his rookie season: he went for over 100 yards against the Bills in a meaningless-for-the-Steelers game (although Buffalo was playing for a wild-card spot).

Returner/wide receiver Willie Reid will also get a second chance. Reid was taken in the third round of the 2006 draft to replace Antwaan Randle El. He was injured for most of his rookie season, and he performed so poorly in '07 that the Steelers traded for Rossum just before the start of the season.

One thought, though: if I'm Mike Tomlin, I'm letting Brian St. Pierre start this game. Charlie Batch is too valuable to lose to injury in a game that doesn't matter. God forbid, if Roethlisberger goes down during the playoffs, the Steelers will be in a bad way. But maybe I'm getting a little ahead of myself.

Coach Killers, Week 14: Anthony Smith to Have Mouth Surgically Sewn Shut

Every week, NFL FanHouse hits the lowlights from Sunday's action, looking at those players who did the most to move their head coaches that much closer to returning to the Bed and Breakfast business.

Anthony Smith, Steelers

Didn't see that coming, did you? First, let me say that I don't have any real problems with Smith, a second-year safety used primarily as a backup until starter Ryan Clark went on injured reserve earlier this season, smacking his gums during the week. It's football; guys yell and scream and run into each other for a living.

The problem, however, is that Smith single-handedly torpedoed Pittsburgh's already-slim chances with what can kindly be described as "his play." Early in the second quarter with the Pats leading 7-3, Smith bit on a play-action pass that resulted in 63-yard touchdown pass to Randy Moss.

And on New England's first drive of the second half, they ran the same play that the Steelers used to break the Bengals' back in the 2005 wild-card game: wide receiver throwback, quarterback hits the deep post. But instead of Antwaan Randle El, Ben Roethlisberger and Cedrick Wilson, it was Moss, Tom Brady, and Jabar Gaffney. The guy responsible for not letting Gaffney get behind the defense? Yep, Mr. Smith.

Where Would Hester Be if Randle El Had Signed With the Bears?

In the midst of an otherwise miserable season, Devin Hester has been a bright spot. He's easily the most exciting player on the Bears, and there's an argument that he's the best. When Chicago used their 2006 second-round pick on the University of Miami player without a true position, a lot of people (me included) scratched their heads.

All the Bears did was ride Hester all the way to the Super Bowl. The rookie had six -- SIX! -- special teams touchdowns, and as we should've probably expected, he took the Super Bowl's opening kickoff to the hizzie.

But if not for Daddy Warbucks Danny Snyder, the Bears probably never would've drafted Hester. You see, Chicago was very interested in wide receiver/punt returner Antwaan Randle El last off-season. Randle El was a free agent coming off a stellar post season, and he also grew up in Chicago.

But the $10 million in guaranteed dough offered by The Danny guaranteed Randle El would be headed to Washington. He returned one punt for a score last season, but it's his contributions on offense that make him potentially more versatile than Hester.
Although Randle El is no Hester, he would not have been a bad addition for the Bears. He struggled a bit last season adjusting to a new offense, but the Thornton High product appears to be getting it this season.... He is averaging 21.6 yards per catch, best in the league among players with at least nine receptions.
The Bears are always looking for pass catchers, and hell, Randle El, a former college quarterback, might've worked his way into the Bears' QB controversy if he had ended up in Chicago. Thinking about that, I'm kinda sorry things didn't work out.

Santana Moss Will Be a Game-Time Decision; Brandon Lloyd Will Not

Yesterday, NFL FanHouse ran the weekly Status Check, talking to bloggers from around the InterTubes about a particularly intriguing matchup. I asked Redskins blogger Skin Patrol about what it means to be without Santana Moss, and more importantly, why Brandon Lloyd is the world's worst wide receiver. His answer:
Take your pick on who steps up (for Moss). Obviously Randle El will see a lot of receptions if Santana is missing ... For other targets, don't expect much out of Brandon Lloyd. I'd predict that Reche Caldwell, James Thrash, or Keenan McCardell would finish with more receptions than Lloyd, who is getting Arringtoned as we speak.
I love it when guys get Arrington-ed, although I'd suggest that this is being disrespectful to LaVar, who, unlike Lloyd, doesn't sound like a complete d-bag.

Whatever, it looks like Moss will be a game-time decision, which means there is the very real possibility that Jason Campbell's two starting wideouts will be Antwaan Randle El and ... James Thrash. That's right, Lloyd has fallen so far, so fast, that he's now looking up at Thrash on the depth chart. Adam Archuleta feels your pain, big guy.

On the upside, history likes the 'Skins tomorrow. A lot. Just don't mention it to Joe Gibbs.

'Skins' Moss Is Hobbled, McCardell Is in, Lloyd Still M.I.A.

To answer FanHouser's Sportz Assassin's question: Yep, the 'Skins are indeed ready to sign 37-year-old Keenan McCardell. And not because owner Dan Snyder just wants to spend money -- Washington really needs some warm bodies at wideout.

Santata Moss, one of the most dangerous receivers in the league, is still recovering from a groin thing that clouds his return. The Washington Post's Jason La Canfora blogs that Moss didn't look so hot during agility drills today, and he doesn't think Santana will play this week, or maybe even the following week.

Assuming Moss sits for the next two games, Antwaan Randle El, James Thrash, and presumably Brandon Lloyd (is he still missing?) will join newcomer McCardell as the wide receivers. And then there's Chris Cooley, who's off to a slow start, but not so much because he's having a bad year, but because defenses know that with Moss hobbled, the tight end is the next most dangerous downfield threat.

But who knows, maybe Week 5 is the week Lloyd finally decides to try. Hey, it could happen.
