B is training to be a professional wrestler and has been watching it for twice the lifespan of Miley Cyrus. He occasionally takes a look at the news over there for FanHouse. He does not know that wrestling is fake, so shhhh. One of the things that made the Chris Benoit double murder/suicide last year bearable in the worst possible definition of the word as a wrestling fan (besides not knowing them personally, I guess) was how over-the-top bizarre the whole ordeal was. A man kills his family with a submission hold and then kills himself using weight lifting equipment, but not before rustling his dogs. No matter how much you liked Benoit as a wrestler, how is that supposed to resonate emotionally? He was messed up and did an unforgivable thing and now he's gone. End of story.
But the story keeps going on, whether we want it to or not. WSB-TV in Atlanta obtained and released the last calls Benoit made to his wife and child shortly before the tragedy. "Hi honey. Hi Dan-Dan. Sorry I missed you. I'll try you on your cell phone. Love you. Bye," is one of the more endearing messages that He Who Must Not Be Named left for his family. In another, Daniel Benoit tells his father that he misses him, wishes he'd come back soon, and then calls him "Pooh-Bear" a bunch of times. Eesh.
At the risk of editorializing too harshly, the real question here is "why the hell does anybody want to listen to the last phone conversations between a guy who went crazy and murdered people and the people he murdered?" Especially when it's a wife and a seven-year old boy. If you're the kind of person who is morbidly curious about that you can listen to the tapes at
WSB-TV's website or the various people who are reporting on them, such as
TMZ.
At least now we know how Daniel died. He got his head stuck in a honey pot.
(I'm sorry.)
