FanHouse NFL Season Preview: Miami Dolphins - Nowhere to Go But Up

Training camps are underway, the NFL season is a month off, and to get you ready for 2008, FanHouse previews all 32 teams, "heat index" style. We'll rate each club in 10 categories on a scale of 1 to 10, high score wins.

Quarterbacks: The Brett Favre Fallout ended up with Chad Pennington coming to Miami. Good thing, because the Dolphins didn't have a quarterback on their roster. Well, technically they did ... but when you are having a three-man race to figure out who might be able to handle the job ... you have no QB. Pennington gives Miami what they need: an experienced, accurate passer. He's a winner, but not the kind of guy who makes those dynamic plays. Right now, they don't have great receivers, either, so a guy that can hit his target is key. Chad Henne may be the future ... but that's what we thought about John Beck last year. Heat Index: 4

Running backs: This is the biggest strength of this offense. During their 1-15 season last year, the fact that Ronnie Brown was having an outstanding season was lost on many people. Brown was worthy of a Pro Bowl spot before he tore his ACL in mid-season. All indications are that he's healed. Brown will share duties with Ricky Williams. Yep, he's back and he's bad! I can't believe I'm saying this, but Ricky has been a model teammate. He's basically lived at the Dolphins complex, is in supreme physical shape and could get back to his pre-retirement form. Of course, that is all the good. The bad is that your steadiest part of the team involves a guy with a major knee injury and another who is now 31, barely has played over the last several seasons, already has two strikes and is unreliable. At least he's not on the hippie lettuce anymore. Heat Index: 7

Rookies Jake Long and Phillip Merling Get Into Fight at Dolphins Camp

Now this is why people stand in the hot sun all day at NFL training camps for!

Rookies Jake Long and Phillip Merling got into a bit of a tussle at Phins camp on Monday. Of course, these are two guys trying to make an impression on their new team ... but it was a bit surprising since they have been best buddies off the field.

''But he's my man off the field,'' said Merling, in an unexpectedly bashful tone. ``I think he was surprised I hit him, because everybody knows we're good buddies off the field. I just threw a quick 1-2 off of instinct, I guess.''

Merling's (the first pick of the second round) fight with Long (the first pick in the entire draft) drew the attention of Tony Sparano ... Miami's new head coach. Sparano actually liked it, since he's been preaching a tough-guy attitude in camp.

I can see why Sparano is pleased. No, he doesn't want his rookie millionaires duking it out like that, but it shows the heart that a 1-15 team needs to have to build itself back up into relevance. They are young with some talent, but that talent won't overwhelm anyone. Miami has to out-tough people to win ... and if Sparano has his way than we could have a nice surprise in the AFC East this year.

Mike Mayock Thinks Jake Long Would Make a Better Right Tackle in the NFL

NFL Network draft maestro Mike Mayock has been beating this drum for the last six months: former Michigan left tackle Jake Long would make a much better right tackle in the NFL, at least to start his career.
"He's got the talent, the toughness and the emotional stability to play left tackle at a high level, if he's transitioned over time ... I know he's a good athlete; I know he's left-handed and is used to playing the left side. With all those things, I think he could be inundated his first two seasons because I've seen tape when he goes up against defensive ends with NFL-type speed, and he struggles a little bit.

Jake doesn't have the rare feet of a Joe Thomas, who started at left tackle from Day 1."
Obviously, the Dolphins disagree, because Long, who signed with the team in the days leading up to the draft, will be the starting left tackle come Sept. 7. Mayock thinks it makes more sense to keep Vernon Carey on the left side, start Long on the right side and gradually transition him into the job. Unfortunately, the Dolphins won just once last year; they don't have the luxury to groom players.

Roger Goodell Says Current Rookie Pay Is 'Ridiculous' and 'There's Something Wrong'

You knew this was coming out at some point ... and here it comes. NFL commish Roger Goodell has gone on record in saying that the current system of rookie contracts is "ridiculous".
"There's something wrong about the system," Goodell said Friday. "The money should go to people who perform."

"[Top overall pick Jake Long] doesn't have to play a down in the NFL and he already has his money," Goodell said during a question-and-answer period at the end of a weeklong sports symposium at the Chautauqua Institution. "Now, with the economics where they are, the consequences if you don't evaluate that player, you can lose a significant amount of money.

"And that money is not going to players that are performing. It's going to a player that never makes it in the NFL. And I think that's ridiculous."

Well, duh. Everyone around football knows that is true and the people who heard him say that applauded him. It is so "ridiculous" that teams are willing to trade out of the top ten picks so they don't get stuck with some bad contract that will kill their cap for years.

Long received a five-year, $57.75 million contract with $30 million of it guaranteed. If he becomes a bust, the Miami Dolphins will be sunk for quite a while.

Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland Hopes to Have All Rookie Draft Picks Signed by July 1

This certainly seems ambitious, but Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland is new to the job and he probably wants to impress his boss, Bill Parcells: Ireland wants to sign the team's final three 2008 draft picks by July 1.

Actually, it's imminently doable -- the first-overall selection, Jake Long, was signed before the draft, and only second-rounders Phillip Merling and Chad Henne, and third-rounder Kendall Langford are currently without contracts. Add in the fact that Henne plans to show up for training camp (something about wanting to win a starting job). Whatever, Ireland doesn't seem too concerned:
He believes that just because Merling was 32nd and in years past that would've been the last pick of the first round but not this year because the Patriots forfeited their pick due to Spygate that won't have a bearing on getting him locked up. It doesn't hurt that Merling's agent is Jimmy Sexton, who happens to be the agent for coach Tony Sparano and team czar Bill Parcells. Come to think of it, he was the Nicktator's agent, too.
(Ah, yes, no post-apocalyptic Dolphins post would be complete without a mention of Nick Saban.)

Ireland is also familiar with Henne's agent, which should only help facilitate the process. Ideally, Miami would have everybody in training camp from Day 1, but even if it doesn't happen, the 2008 team is already more cohesive than last year's version. Now if this Dolphins team can just find a way to win more than one game.

EA Sports Rookie Madden Bowl: Red Carpet

EA Sports recently held its second annual Rookie Madden Bowl in Los Angeles. Players competed in a tournament just like the regular Madden Bowl held during Super Bowl week, but this one was just for rookies. Oh how I love rookies! With the exception of whiz kids like Matt Ryan, most of them are pretty goofy and not yet jaded by the media attention. Join me on the red carpet as I talk to Jake Long, Darren McFadden, Devin Thomas, Dexter Jackson, Kevin O'Connell, Andre Caldwell and others before the tournament.

Besides all the smack talking about Madden skills and player ratings, watch at 0:54 to find out if Dustin Keller can handle the heat of Jets questioning ... and make sure to stay for Jonathan Stewart's hilarious ramblings at the very end of the video.

Teammates Heart Jake Long, Coach Sparano More Measures in Assessment

Yesterday, Vernon Carey, the guy who's being replaced by first-round pick Jake Long, professed his love for the Dolphins' new left tackle. Today, another lineman, Justin Smiley, joins the hugfest.
Smiley, who played the past two seasons in San Francisco with future Hall of Famer Larry Allen, doesn't think it'll be long before the rest of the NFL sees what he sees in Long.

"Even though we were in shorts, you can tell he's a special player," Smiley said. "He's going to be a perennial Pro Bowler."
Despite pre-draft concerns that Long might be a better right tackle than left tackle, so far so good. At least according to his teammates. Head coach Tony Sparano was more measured in his assessment:
Sparano said Long's biggest challenge, like most rookies, would be matching the speed of an NFL game. "You get in game situations and how that changes at our level is really something I think that will test him," Sparano said.
Sparano didn't waste any time putting his new skillz to work.

And that'll be the biggest difference between college and the NFL. Instead of lining up against a player like Vernon Gholston once or twice a season, Long will be doing it every week. And the learning curve is steep. Not so much because Long is in danger of losing his job if he struggles early, but because it could get whoever ends up under center maimed.

On the upside, Miami has plenty of depth at quarterback, so they can withstand a few injuries while Long gets adjusted.

Vernon Carey Is More Than Happy to Have Jake Long Take His Job

There were some pre-draft concerns that Michigan left tackle Jake Long might never be a perennial Pro Bowler at the position in the NFL. Many draftniks declared him better suited for the right side. If only somebody had spoken up about Robert Gallery before the Raiders used the second-overall pick on a guy who now plays guard.

The Dolphins seem unfazed by all the blathering, and the left tackle job is Long's to lose. So far, so good. Not only is head coach Tony Sparano happy with Long's progress, but the guy he's replacing fully supports the move.
"Aw, man. Jake Long is a hard worker," Vernon Carey said. "He listens to the coaches. He listens to me. He's always trying to get better.

"He's one of those guys, he can come out here one day and do it bad and then the next day he picks it up right quick. I'm like, 'Wow. I wish I had it like that.' He's a guy who can pick up things real good. That's what you need at this level."
Yes, after a 1-15 showing, that, along with a bunch of other stuff, is what you need. Now all that's left to do is find a quarterback and pray Jason Taylor turns down that movie role.

Chiefs, Glenn Dorsey 'Have Had Conversations,' No Deal Imminent

It's sorta surprising that three of the top four picks from April's NFL Draft are all under contract. More surprising: the Raiders' No. 4 pick, Darren McFadden, is included in this group, which means their won't be a holdout. That's different.

In addition to McFadden, the Falcons have signed Matt Ryan, the third-overall selection, and the Dolphins had Jake Long under contract days before the draft. Despite all the happy negotiating going on, the Kansas City Star's Adam Teicher writes that it doesn't necessarily suggest the Chiefs and their first first-rounder, Glenn Dorsey (taken fifth overall), are close to working out a deal.
President/general manager Carl Peterson said the Chiefs have been in contact with Dorsey's agent, Joel Segal. "We've had conversations, and that's all I can say," Peterson said. ...

Segal declined comment. But given the particulars of McFadden's contract, Segal might not be content with a marginal raise over the fifth pick of last year's draft, offensive tackle Levi Brown.
Teicher points out that the Chiefs have a spotty record when it comes to signing their first-round picks -- 11 of their 16 selections under Peterson have been late to camp, including 2007's Dwayne Bowe. Compounding matters: Kansas City had two first-rounders this April; in addition to Dorsey, they team also drafted offensive lineman Branden Albert.

So according to the laws of probability, based on Peterson's track record, there's roughly a nine percent chance both players are signed before training camp. Hey, it could happen.

Miami Dolphins Waive Drew Mormino After He Fails Physical

The Miami Dolphins waived offensive lineman Drew Mormino after he failed a physical. Mormino, a sixth round pick last year, spent all of the 2007 season on Injured Reserve with a torn labrum.

One thing it means ... according to The Phinsider ... that #1 overall pick Jake Long will be able to wear jersey #77. Long wore that number at Michigan; Mormino was assigned that number with the Dolphins.

It also means that the Dolphins will have a very, very, very young offensive line. Long, a rookie, will be planted in as the left tackle. Fourth round pick Shawn Murphy could be the starting right guard. Next to him is center Samson Satele -- a second year player. Sixth round pick Donald Thomas could fight Murphy for a starting gig or, at least, figure in as a backup on the interior of the line. Second year player Ikechuku Ndukwe could factor in as well.

Expect Miami to take a gander at a veteran free agent before camp starts in July.
