The Word:

Kansas City Chiefs Could Be in the Koren Robinson Business

This is wonderful news for, well, Koren Robinson. According to the NFL Network (via Kansas City Star's Jeffrey Flanagan), the Chiefs have shown interest in the former Seahawks and Packers wide receiver/return dude.
"Oakland and Kansas City expressed some interest in Robinson ... there isn't exactly a clamoring for his services. Still, a receiver such as Robinson is too talented to overlook. Any team that needs some depth at the position -– Dallas, Cleveland, -- would consider Robinson."
This news certainly can't make Al Davis happy given his recent epiphany. For the Chiefs, Flanagan points out that they've made it clear that players with the dreaded "character concerns" disorder are a no-go; Robinson certainly qualifies for the former which makes the latter seem unlikely, even though there is a gaping need for an experienced pass catcher on the roster after Dwayne Bowe.

MVN.com's Chiefs blogger Ryan Brown offers some perspective:
Rarely does someone seem to overcome their issues and their off-the-field problems entirely. ... That's one of the main reasons that the Chiefs got rid of fan favorite Jared Allen - he of the two-time DUI conviction. Allen appeared to have rid himself of his demons...and then promptly opened up a bar in Kansas City.
And I'd say Allen's troubles don't even approach what Robinson has been through.

As far as rehabilitation goes, the Cowboys have become the Betty Ford of NFL franchises. Maybe they can help Robinson straighten out his life. Added bonus: they're in the market for a No. 2 wide receiver. Two-for-one.

Meet the Robinsons: Packers Cut Koren; Tariq Arrested for Slinging Ecstasy

It hasn't been a great week for the Robinson family.

First off, receiver Koren Robinson was cut by the Packers, ending his tumultuous career in Green Bay. Robinson was suspended for a year after alcohol problems but seemed to have turned his life around. Last year, he was a serviceable part of the Packers' receiving and return corps and putting behind his history of alcohol abuse.

Next comes Tariq Robinson ... Koren's brother ... who was arrested for trafficking ecstasy in Cary, NC -- just outside of Raleigh.

Koren (who starred at NC State) owns the house that Tariq lives in. The good news is that there seems to be no other link between Koren and these charges. According to WRAL, the brothers have been estranged for over a year.

While this could cause teams to pause from signing Koren ... it really shouldn't keep him from finding another gig somewhere fairly soon. Buzz is that there are teams interested and if Koren really has his ish together, he'll be fine.

Do You Forgive Leonard Little?

For the past 10 years, I've hated Leonard Little. I've questioned why he was allowed to continue playing in the NFL. I've seen him as another (unprintable adjective) athlete who committed horror and got away with it. Sure enough, if it were Roger Goodell's NFL in 1998, he probably wouldn't be playing. Now, quite honestly, I'm not sure what I think.

Little has finally addressed for the first time what happened then, when he killed a woman while driving drunk, and the aftermath he's dealt with personally at a school in St. Louis.
"A few weeks later, I tried to kill myself," ... "I had gone back home to my mom's house outside Knoxville (Tenn.), and the first thing I did was just go down in her basement. It had no windows, just a bathroom, a sink and a television. I stayed in the dark for days. All I did was cry. I couldn't deal with what I'd done."
Little intentionally drives past the spot of the accident on the way to Edward Jones Dome to remind himself, and refuses to celebrate his birthday because it's also the anniversary of the worst day of his life ("What's there to celebrate? It's an annual reminder of what I did"). He tells the children at the school, "I killed someone and I constantly think about the hurt I caused that family. ... I made a bad decision, and it cost someone her life and ruined her family's lives. You don't want that burden on you."

This touches on two matters.

BradyFan83 Takes on LaDainian Tomlinson

The great NFL musician BradyFan83 is back, and this time he has Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson in his sights:

The song is to the tune of "Mrs. Robinson," and the lyrics include a jab at Tomlinson's performance (or lack thereof) in the AFC Championship Game that is hilarious even though you'll see it coming.

My favorite thing about it is that it reminds us that at the time of the 2001 draft, it was actually open to debate who would be a better player, Tomlinson or Koren Robinson.

DeShawn Wynn on IR With Shoulder Injury

A day after exiting Green Bay's Monday night contest against the Broncos with a shoulder injury, DeShawn Wynn was placed on injured reserve, ending his season. Wynn was hit in his shoulder on his only carry of the game, and said he couldn't feel it. Ryan Grant emerged to rush for over 100 yards in Wynn's place, as part of Green Bay's win. While the door to the 7th round pick's season closes, another one could be opening for Koren Robinson.

Robinson wasn't quite ready for the team to activate him for Monday night, but Wynn's placement on IR means Koren is now on the Packers' roster. That doesn't mean that Robinson will be active for Green Bay's upcoming game against Kansas City, but there is a chance he could be. It's an unfortunate turn of events for Wynn who had worked his way up from 7th round pick to the team's starter. Grant and Vernand Morency will likely split the carries from here on out in what's been largely an ineffective rushing game this year.

Packers Get Roster Exemption for Robinson

Earlier in the week, we told you about Koren Robinson's reinstatement with the NFL following a year-long ban. I questioned whether or not Robinson would actually make a difference for the Packers in his return because of his layoff. Turns out, he may have some time to get up to full speed without actually effecting Green Bay's roster:
The Green Bay Packers have been granted a roster exemption for wide receiver Koren Robinson until Oct. 30, General Manager Ted Thompson said Thursday.
...
The exemption means Robinson won't count against the Packers' 53-man roster as long as he remains inactive. If the Packers choose to activate Robinson for their next game on Oct. 29 at Denver, the team would have to cut another player.
Like I said, he'll have some time to get up to speed, but not a whole lot. If the Packers really feel Robinson can help them in the kick return game, don't be surprised to see him activated by week eight. However, if it means cutting someone else, I'm not so sure it would happen.

Roger Goodell Is in Touch With His Feelings

FanHouser Larry Brown wonders if Koren Robinson's return from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's doghouse will help the Packers' offense. Brown writes that Robinson's contributions will likely come on special teams, as a kick returner, and could ease into the fourth or fifth wideout spot.

But I should note that commissar Rog, who has a knack for harsh, sometimes arbitrary rulings, isn't just tough. He's also about the love:
One year to the day that Koren Robinson was suspended for violating the NFL's substance abuse program, commissioner Roger Goodell sent the Green Bay Packers wide receiver a letter telling him he could play again.

The letter came on the heels of a meeting Goodell had with Robinson Sunday - in of all places, University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. - in which Goodell gave the troubled receiver a stern warning about this being his last chance. Then Goodell gave him a hug.
Robinson seems like a good dude who's kinda created a mess for himself. I've given Goodell the business about meting out punishment in a heavy-handed, seemingly random fashion, but he it's also worth pointing out that he has a softer, Lifetime side. No word on if Goodell and Bill Belichick exchanged hugs last month.

Can Robinson's Return Help the Packers?

Word came out on Wednesday that Koren Robinson would be allowed to return to the Packers, a year after his suspension for violating the league's substance abuse program. The one year suspension was the result of Robinson's third substance abuse violation; Commissioner Goodell has been harsh on repeat offenders. So now that he's available for Green Bay, will he be able to contribute? Can he even make a difference?

Robinson says he's been doing two-a-days the last two months, dropping his body fat to 4.9%. He also adds that his knee is fully-recovered from surgery. As of now, the Packers are seeking word from the league as to whether or not Koren can be activated on the 53-man roster for the Monday Night Football game against Denver on October 29th (the Packers are on a bye this week).

Robinson's likely immediate contribution to the team will come in special teams -- as a kick returner. He will probably compete as a fourth or fifth receiver in the offense, behind Donald Driver, Greg Jennings, and James Jones. We've already see a player like Larry Johnson struggle after missing training camp, so this won't be an easy task for Robinson. I'm not expecting Robinson to make a difference for Green Bay, but the most important factor is that Robinson is clean, and on-track to reviving his life.

Brett Favre Wants Koren Robinson Reinstated

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Koren Robinson is currently serving a one-year suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, and although the year is up, that doesn't mean he's automatically back in the league.

Commissioner Roger Goodell still has to agree to reinstate Robinson, and he'll only do so if he's convinced that Robinson, who has multiple drunk driving arrests on his record, has really cleaned up his act. But Robinson has one high-profile player in his corner. His quarterback, Brett Favre, said this:
"I think he's done everything he's been asked to do. And it's time to set a good example that you can resurrect not only your career but your life.

"There's still a lot left for him to do on and off the field. But give a guy an opportunity. I hope it works out for us here, I do. He can help us but more importantly, from my conversations with him, he sounds like he's doing outstanding off the field."

Favre said he talked to Robinson this week and thinks he's made a sincere effort to turn his life around. Of course, we've heard things like that about Robinson everywhere he's been, from North Carolina State to the Seahawks to the Vikings to the Packers, and he's always screwed up. In any event, I do think Goodell is going to give Robinson one last chance.
