As If Our Country Could Be Less Hopeful, Maria Sharapova Is Off the Market

You know, for Internet geeks and men with eyeballs all around the world, Maria Sharapova is sports' Marilyn Monroe. Tall, blond, beautiful, successful, athletic and -- just for added excitement -- the daughter of a dad who's 53 cards short of a full deck.

Well, get prepared to bash your unrealistic imagination, because Sharapova now has a boyfriend. The object of my undying jealousy lucky guy is none other than 25-year-old Charlie Ebersol who -- what do you know! -- is the son of NBC Sports Chairman and President Dick Ebersol.

Kudryavtseva Used Sharapova's Mini-Pants-Suit as Motivation to Beat Maria

It turns out that British men are not the only ones who hated the long shorts short experiment Maria Sharapova pulled off at Wimbledon. Alla Kudryavtseva, who pulled off a stunning upset of Sharapova while effectively turning off half the world's tennis watching televisions, hated her outfit too. So much so, that she used it as motivation to beat Maria in their match.
"It's very pleasant to beat Maria," she added. "Why? I don't like her outfit. She experiments, and I give her credit for that. She's brave enough to experiment.

"But it's a little too much of everything. It was one of the motivations to beat her."
Petty? Perhaps. But pettiness breeds contempt and contempt usually breeds rivalries. And, as far as I can tell, that's exactly what tennis needs. If it happens to come from two attractive European women who take pleasure in destroying one another on the tennis court, so be it.

Alternately, an interesting bet would be to have, the next time the play, the loser wear the winner's gear. Kudryavtseva would rock the mini-pants-suit and Sharapova would go back to the skirt.

Alla Kudryavtseva Upsets Maria Sharapova

Maria Sharapova lost in a stunning upset to fellow Russian Alla Kudryavtseva at Wimbledon today, putting up a surprisingly poor showing in losing 6-2, 6-4.

Asked afterward if it was the biggest win of her career, Kudryavtseva, who is ranked 154th in the world, said, "For sure, yes, absolutely."

Kudryavtseva has never won any WTA Tour title, and this is only the second time she has advanced beyond the second round of a Grand Slam.

For Sharapova, who won the Australian Open this year and won Wimbledon in 2004, this is her earliest Grand Slam since 2003, her first year on the Tour.

Maria Sharapova and Her Undie-Hiding Mini-Pants-Suit Are Unpopular at Wimbledon

Two days into Wimbledon, and the locals are already clamoring about Maria Sharapova's tennis outfit. Normally, you would (if you were some sort of stereotypical jerk) think it was the women complaining that her skirt was too short. But not this time.

No sir, it's the fine gentlemen of the greater England area that are in an uproar at Sharapova's decision to wear ... gasp ... shorts.
Roofer Steve Johnson, 35, of Earlsfield, South London, said: "I come here for the tennis but there's no denying it's a bonus to watch some of the women players running around in short skirts.

"Sharapova's a great player but I feel she's letting down blokes in the crowd by opting to wear shorts."

Marketing executive Gary Olsen, 40, of Bristol, said: "Sharapova's a great looking girl and a great talent.

"But I don't understand why she feels the need to recreate the look of Martina Navratilova."

Maria Sharapova Loses in French Open

Maria Sharapova is out of the French Open.

Sharapova, the top women's tennis player in the world, lost to fellow Russian Dinara Safina, 6-7, 7-6, 6-2, in their fourth-round match this morning. With all of the Americans out of the draw, Sharapova was probably the best-known player left among American fans in a French Open that will soon be completely out of the American sports consciousness.

Sharapova appeared to be cruising toward a victory and even had a match point in the second set, but Safina rallied to win, setting up a quarterfinal match with yet another Russian, Elena Dementieva.

The 22-year-old Safina, the 13th seed at Roland Garros, also beat Sharapova in 2006. She is best known to casual fans as the younger sister of former world No. 1 men's player Marat Safin.

Maria Sharapova Is Apparently Better at Football Than Most of the Chicago Bears

Here is a video from earlier this year of the lovely Maria Sharapova winging a football in preparation for Israel in Fed Cup 2008. The Israelis must have been a formidable group (just in case you're interested). I don't follow tennis, but I watch enough football to know that one of the world's best tennis players has a better arm than Rex Grossman or Kyle Orton, and better hands than anybody listed on the Bears' depth chart at wide receiver.

Sure, that sounds like a knock on the current crop of "skill" players on the roster (and maybe it is). But the fact that a professional tennis player looks more comfortable throwing and catching a football than a group of guys who get paid to throw and catch a football ... well, let's just say 2008 probably won't be the year the Bears make it back to the Super Bowl. Luckily, the running game is shaping up nicely.

Attractive Olympian: Maria Sharapova

Olympic athletes often don't get paid to do anything other than look good. In that vein, Attractive Olympians handicaps which athletes may rake in endorsement deals after the Olympics.

You may have heard of Maria Sharapova before. Tall blonde woman? Plays tennis? Endorses cameras and cell phones, and causes fleets of tennis balls to follow her down the street and form smiley-faces for her?

Ohhh, that Maria Sharapova.

Yes, the #1 tennis player in the world will be competing in Beijing in pursuit of an Olympic medal. Though it will be her first Olympiad, Sharapova has already proven herself on the international stage several times over, having captured three Grand Slam titles ('04 Wimbledon, '06 U.S. Open, '08 Australian Open) and recently claimed the world's #1 ranking for the fourth time in her career.

But is a fabulously wealthy, statuesque 21-year-old Russian blonde really all that attractive? Sure, Maxim named her the world's sexiest athlete four years running, and she won an Espy for hottest female athlete, and she posed for SI's Swimsuit Issue, but has this ever been put to a popular vote? After the jump, examine more Maria evidence and cast your vote in our Attractive Olympian poll.

Maria Sharapova Is Right, WTA Is Wrong: Tennis Is More Important Than Photo Shoots

The big controversy in tennis right now centers on the Women's Tennis Association threatening to fine Maria Sharapova over her refusal to participate in a photo shoot.

The WTA's threatened fines could run in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and such a fine would be a travesty because Sharapova is right and the WTA is wrong. Sharapova explains on her web site:
I want all my fans to know that the WTA Tour is forcing me and several of the other top players to do a 4 hour commercial shoot for WTA Tour marketing materials. They want me to do this shoot on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday of the Rome tournament after flying 12 hours from LA. I have set my own personal rules when is comes to doing shoots and I never do shoots before tournaments because they are mentally draining and I want to just focus on my tennis.
It's not unreasonable for the WTA to require the players to take part in some promotional activities, but it is unreasonable for the WTA to schedule photo shoots right before the players are going to play a tournament and expect all of them to comply.

Here's a wacky idea: If the WTA can't find a time for a photo shoot that works for Sharapova, why not just send a photographer to her matches and use promotional pictures that show her, you know, playing tennis?
