Bengals May Fire Marvin Lewis By the End of the Week

There is a rumor spreading around the Cincinnati area that Marvin Lewis could be fired by the end of the week.
Sources have informed Pro Football Central that the Cincinnati Bengals are nearing toward a decision that could result in head coach Marvin Lewis being fired by the end of the week. The source also states that owner Mike Brown is also deciding upon whether to name assistant head coach Paul Alexander or defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer as the interim head coach.

Now who knows if this rumor has anything behind it. I mean, doesn't every breaking story come from Jay Glazer, Chris Mortensen and John Clayton?

Sure, the Rams fired Scott Linehan and the Raiders fired Lane Kiffin already this week. They, like the Bengals, have gotten off to really bad starts this year. However, the Rams and Raiders are heading into bye weeks which gives their new head coaches some time to make their own adjustments. The Bengals' bye isn't until Week 10.

Jim Haslett Makes a Change: Marc Bulger In, Trent Green Out as Rams' Quarterback

It didn't take long for new Rams interim head coach Jim Haslett to reverse the biggest decision that the recently fired Scott Linehan made this season.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that the Rams will put quarterback Marc Bulger back in the starting lineup and move Trent Green back to the bench.

Linehan made the surprise decision last week to replace Bulger with Green, a decision that was immediately ripped by many of the players in the locker room. Haslett apparently agrees with the dissent that was voiced by Rams players.

The bottom line, though, is that this is a bad football team for reasons other than the play of the quarterback position, and neither Bulger nor Green is going to make the Rams a good team. Haslett can put the deck chairs back where they were, but he's still the captain of the Titanic.

Rams Fire Scott Linehan, Hire Jim Haslett as Interim Head Coach

Scott Linehan has been fired as the head coach of the St. Louis Rams, and Jim Haslett has been hired as his replacement on an interim basis.

The firing was made early this morning, according to multiple media outlets. Adam Schefter of NFL Network reported that Haslett will get the top job.

After the Rams lost to the Bills yesterday, everyone -- including Linehan himself -- expected the firing to come today. The Rams are off to an 0-4 start and are almost universally regarded as the worst team in the league.

Linehan's two-plus seasons as Rams head coach ends with an 11-25 record. Haslett, who has been the Rams' defensive coordinator throughout Linehan's tenure as head coach, had a 46-52 record as head coach of the New Orleans Saints from 2000 to 2005.

Bills 31, Rams 14: If That Was How Linehan Went Out, Well, It Was Probably Fitting

Scott Linehan began this afternoon's game against the Bills with a career 11-24 record as an NFL head coach. He also began the game purportedly on the hot seat -- rumor was that if he lost the game, he would be fired.

So, now, we just wait. We wait for Linehan to be fired, and we wait for the rest of the world to realize that the Buffalo Bills are locked into the playoffs and are a legitimate contender. Maybe. Even if they're not the 2007 Patriots, they are overwhelmingly underrated.

Trent Edwards was again "quite solid", coming on strong with a long strike to Lee Evans late in the game and ending up with a 15/25, 197, 1/1 line. Marshawn Lynch wasn't even close to dominant, only picking up 57 yards on 19 carries, although his YPC average dipped significantly late in the game while the Bills tried to run clock. Fortunately -- or unfortunately, depending on your fantasy situation -- Fred Jackson was able to handle the end zone bid-ness, scoring on a 22 yard scramble.

Rams Looking to Trade or Release Torry Holt

There is a rumor going around that the St. Louis Rams are actively trying to trade WR Torry Holt. If they cannot get him dealt soon, they may just release him.

The tip came from the utmost reliable source: a caller to a talk radio show.
Wednesday morning an anonymous tip came to a local sports-talk station saying the Rams had released cornerback Fakhir Brown. The caller knew what he was talking about. The following morning, the same voice called at about the same time and said Linehan was trying to release or trade wide receiver Torry Holt because the two despise each other.

Normally, you scoff when crazy things like this are heard, but when this dysfunctional situation is analyzed, the realization hits you that anything is possible.

Like that excerpt said, it is crazy to believe that kind of rumor ... but you cannot totally dismiss it. Remember, this comes on the heels of Holt rolling over on his coach about the benching of Marc Bulger. This also comes after Holt made comments during the offseason that he wants to bolt St. Louis to join his brother in Carolina.

It would seem if there was a organizational decision to choose either Holt or head coach Scott Linehan, the Rams would chose Holt. Especially since there is a rumor that Linehan could be fired after their game with the Buffalo Bills today.

Peter King Reports That Linehan Is Done if the Rams Lose to the Bills (So, Uh, Goodbye)

The word from Peter King this afternoon on the NBC halftime show -- where craziness ensues, apparently -- is that the Rams plan on firing Scott Linehan if the Rams lose to the Bills on Sunday. (Via Bills.com)
On the Notre Dame halftime show on NBC this afternoon SI's Peter King reported that if the Rams lose to the Bills on Sunday that Scott Linehan is expected to be given his "walking papers" as King put it.
A few thoughts run through my mind when I hear that. First of all, well, wow! Shocking! Or not. The Rams are horrible. They haven't been remotely involved in a close game yet this season, and they had Pacman openly mocking them after the first week of the season.

On the other hand, well, maybe this isn't really fair. Wait, forget I said that. Linehan is the guy who thinks benching Marc Bulger in front of Trent Green is the right move to bring this team out of the funk. I suppose that losing to the Bills -- a clearly superior team -- is kind of a silly and unfounded way to judge whether he keeps his job (why not just fire him now?) but, hey, it worked for the Raiders.

Torry Holt Apologizes to Marc Bulger for Scott Linehan's Incompetence

Man, what a great time to be a Rams fan. Easily the worst team in the NFL (with, as Matt Snyder wrote yesterday, "all apologies to the Lions"), St. Louis has now decided to give up on the 2008 season three weeks in, and bench Marc Bulger for Trent Green. Because it's 1999 up in here. Or something.

Whatever, running back Steven Jackson wasted little time ripping "head coach" Scott Linehan for the move, and today we learn that perennial Pro Bowl wideout Torry Holt promptly apologized to Bulger upon hearing the news, like it was somehow his fault that Linehan sucks at his job.
"You know I was shocked, I was really shocked," Holt said. "First and foremost, I went up to Marc and I immediately apologized to him as a receiver and for our receiving group and for our offense for not making enough plays to give him an opportunity to stay on the football field with us as we move forward in the fourth week."

Holt declined to comment on whether he thought Linehan had made the right decision in benching Bulger.

"I'll keep those thoughts to myself and just go ahead and move forward with what we have," Holt said. "Trent is the quarterback for Sunday, and we have (Leonard Little) back, so let's talk about some of the positives."
Okay, Torry, let's talk about some of the positives...

Rams Not Happy About Bulger Benching

The Scott Linehan era in St. Louis is rapidly becoming one of the biggest disasters in NFL history. After starting 4-1, his Rams have gone 7-23 ... including 3-16 in the past two seasons and three embarrassing defeats this year. Earlier this week, in clearly a desperate measure, Linehan removed starting QB Marc Bulger and replaced him with Trent Green.

Apparently, with Steven Jackson as the mouthpiece, we may be a few steps from a full-fledged mutiny.
(O)utspoken running back Steven Jackson took care of that Thursday night on his "Rolling the Dice" radio show on KLOU (103.3 FM). Jackson said benching Bulger was the "wrong decision."

"He's our general," said Jackson, who then pointed out that you don't pay someone "$60-something million" and then sit him on the bench.
It gets better, though ...
When asked by the radio show's host, Malcolm Briggs, if there were other Rams players who were against the benching, Jackson paused and replied, "I'm not the only one who feels this way."
Oh, still better ...

Looking at the NFL's Winless Teams

There are six NFL teams that have yet to win a game this season. All are sitting at 0-3 (except the 0-2 Houston Texans). Some of these teams entered the season with high expectations but are falling flat. Others are just fulfilling their destiny.

Two of the teams (Bengals and Browns) face off this Sunday.

Here is a quick look at the winless teams (I'm omitting the Texas due to the fact they've not had a home game and having to deal with Hurricane Ike).

Kansas City Chiefs

Why they are here: They've been trotting out no-names at quarterback, they have the second-worst run defense in the NFL and they can't pressure the quarterback (just two sacks). They were spanked at home by the Oakland Raiders.

Why they could turn it around: Well, they get the Raiders again! Uh, wait, that didn't go too well when they met earlier. They need Larry Johnson to have a gigantic season and all those draft picks over-performing to just knock out a few wins. Control the ball with LJ, keep the other team from getting their offense on the field and hope Dwayne Bowe can make some plays down the field.

Outlook: Herm Edwards says, "you play to win the game." Too bad Herm won't be around when Kansas City finally does win some games. The Chiefs have the look of the worst team in the NFL but they do have some nice young talent to build upon. The odd thing is that KC may have had the biggest impact in the league when Tom Brady was hurt in a game against the Chiefs.

Rams Owner Gets Stern With Scott Linehan

While sports talk radio in St. Louis and the entire internet are abuzz with Scott Linehan dissenters, going back to this preseason and late in the year of '07, we hadn't heard anything at all of substance from the Rams' front office. That all changed yesterday. Owner Chip Rosenbloom, who took the reins when his mother (Georgia Frontiere) died this past January, has been forced to speak out after only two embarrassing weeks.
"It is the job of the head coach, Scott Linehan, to figure out how to motivate and give some urgency to this team," Rosenbloom told the Post-Dispatch on Monday. "I believe in these players and I believe in this coach."
That sounds like he's ready to start apologizing for Coach Linehan, but as he continued, things became a little clearer ... and it wasn't confidence-inspiring for any Linehan supporters.
"Obviously, the game of football is about winning," Rosenbloom said. "The level of play is not acceptable to me or anybody in the organization."

"Things will get better, and if they don't, changes will be made."
Will they get better? Well, it's hard to see how they could get worse than losing 79-16 in the first two games combined. The team hasn't shown any signs of life, though.
