NFL Power Rankings

By AARON SCHATZ, Football Outsiders Special to AOL

A few weeks ago in this space, I wrote that the New York Giants were falling apart at the end of the season for a fourth straight year. Since that time, the Giants have won every single game, and now they are one win from the Super Bowl.

Is this a surprise? Absolutely, but it doesn't mean we haven't seen it before. The 2007 Giants are remarkably similar to another team that made the playoffs because of a couple close wins during a mediocre regular season, then suddenly turned into a juggernaut in January: The 2003 Carolina Panthers.

The Panthers went 11-5 that year even though they only outscored their opponents by a total of 21 points, with a minus-5 turnover differential. This year's Giants outscored their opponents by just 22 points, with a minus-10 turnover differential.

The strengths of the 2003 Panthers were a running back tandem featuring a veteran power back and a shiftier rookie, an excellent pass rush, and a smart middle linebacker. The strengths of the 2007 Giants are a running back tandem featuring a (younger) veteran power back and a shiftier rookie, an excellent pass rush, and a smart middle linebacker.

Jake Delhomme had 19 touchdowns and 16 interceptions in the regular season, but only threw one pick in the playoffs. Eli Manning this year had 23 touchdowns and 20 interceptions in the regular season, yet so far has no picks in the playoffs.

In order to make it to the Super Bowl, the Panthers had to beat two teams they lost to during the regular season, Dallas and Philadelphia. The Giants will need to beat two teams they lost to during the regular season, Dallas and Green Bay.

The 2003 Panthers eventually lost the Super Bowl to the New England Patriots. The 2007 Giants? We'll have to see.

Only eight teams are still listed in the AOL power rankings, but each team is listed with separate ranks in offense, defense, and special teams, based on what all 32 teams would look like at this point in the season using our advanced DVOA metric (explained here) that puts less weight on games earlier in the year.

Stuck in the Middle

Team Mo' Skinny
9 Washington Redskins NC
Offensive line depth is an issue to address this offseason, but when is depth not an issue in Washington? Previous: 9 (OFF: 15 / DEF: 8 / ST: 15) Record: 9-8
10 Tampa Bay Buccaneers down
The offensive line is young, but the skill players very old: Jeff Garcia (above, 38 next season), Joey Galloway (37), Ike Hilliard (32), and Michael Pittman (33). Previous: 8 (OFF: 16 / DEF: 7 / ST: 17)
    Record: 9-8
11 Pittsburgh Steelers down
The top priority this offseason: Improving the offensive line, with guard Alan Faneca (above) sure to leave and center Sean Mahan not really doing the job. Previous: 10 (OFF: 17 / DEF: 4 / ST: 27)
    Record: 10-7
12 Tennessee Titans down
The Titans desperately need to improve on offense, but the first order of business is making sure Albert Haynesworth does not go elsewhere in free agency. Previous: 11 (OFF: 19 / DEF: 9 / ST: 13)
    Record: 10-7
13 Cleveland Browns down
Figure out quarterback situation. Improve secondary. Draft young pass-rushing OLB to play opposite Kamerion Wimbley. Previous: 11 (OFF: 9 / DEF: 19 / ST: 2) Record: 10-6
14 Philadelphia Eagles down
Either keep Donovan McNabb and load up big for one last run, or commit to rebuilding, tell Andy Reid to spend time with his family, and trade McNabb. Either way, find a new tight end and better secondary depth. Previous: 12 (OFF: 8 / DEF: 12 / ST: 32) Record: 8-8
15 Chicago Bears NC
Add depth to the offensive line (probable), get the Eagles to trade them McNabb (possible), and figure out a way to replace free agent Lance Briggs (irreplaceable). Previous: 15 (OFF: 25 / DEF: 2 /
    ST: 1) Record: 7-9
16 New Orleans Saints down
Figure out how to use Reggie Bush and find a new partner to replace Deuce McAllister. Avoid free agent defensive backs from teams that primarily play zone coverage. Previous: 13 (OFF: 4 / DEF: 27 / ST: 22) Record: 7-9
17 Minnesota Vikings down
Improve the pass rush and either find a new quarterback or work on Tarvaris Jackson's mechanics eight hours a day for the next six months. Previous: 10 (OFF: 13 / DEF: 20 / ST: 12)
    Record: 8-8
18 Denver Broncos up
Figure out why a team with Champ Bailey and Dre' Bly is playing so much zone coverage. Rebuild offensive line with young talent. Get Javon Walker some Prozac. Previous: 21 (OFF: 12 / DEF: 21 / ST: 19) Record: 7-9
19 Houston Texans up
Improve the supporting cast around the four defensive stars (Williams, Robinson, Ryans, and Okoye). Improve offensive line - you know, just like every other offseason. Previous: 20 (OFF: 7 / DEF: 30 / ST: 4) Record: 8-8
20 Cincinnati Bengals down
Concentrate on improving league-worst pass rush, which will help young cornerbacks to blossom. Draft young running back or sign Michael Turner. Previous: 17 (OFF: 11 / DEF: 28 / ST: 6) Record: 7-9
21 Buffalo Bills down
Build the offense around Trent Edwards' strengths and find J.P. Losman a new home. Find a better receiver to start opposite Lee Evans. Add defensive line depth. Previous: 16 (OFF: 20 / DEF: 15 / ST: 10) Record: 7-9
22 Arizona Cardinals up
Figure out what's up with Matt Leinart. Improve a couple spots in the front seven. Improve offensive line - you know, just like every other offseason. Previous: 24 (OFF: 18 / DEF: 23 / ST: 29)
    Record: 8-8
23 New York Jets down
Find defensive players who fit the 3-4, or scrap it. Sign or draft a good slot receiver and another cornerback to play opposite Darrelle Revis. Previous: 22 (OFF: 24 / DEF: 17 / ST: 14)
    Record: 4-12
24 Baltimore Ravens down
Find new coaching staff and quarterback. Work on rebuilding offensive line. Previous: 23 (OFF: 26 / DEF: 14 / ST: 26) Record: 5-11
25 Carolina Panthers up
Completely blow up offense except for Steve Smith and DeAngelo Williams. Dedicate some resources to special teams. Previous: 26 (OFF: 31 / DEF: 13 / ST: 28) Record: 7-9
26 Atlanta Falcons up
Pretty much everything, starting with a new quarterback and a new coach who will finally give the starting running back job to Jerious Norwood. Previous: 30 (OFF: 23 / DEF: 31 / ST: 9)
    Record: 4-12
27 Kansas City Chiefs NC
Abandon hope. On both offense and defense, Chiefs were significantly better on third down compared to first and second down, a very strong indicator that a team will be worse next year. Previous: 27 (OFF: 30 / DEF: 22 / ST: 18)
    Record: 4-12
28 Detroit Lions down
Contemplate that firing Mike Martz will do nothing to fix the abominable defense. Convince NFL to schedule Denver 16 times in 2008. Previous: 25 (OFF: 21 / DEF: 32 / ST: 24) Record: 7-9
29 Oakland Raiders NC
Find the best possible new defensive tackles - this year's defensive collapse was almost entirely a domino effect from trouble on the line. Get JaMarcus Russell lots of practice. Previous: 29 (OFF: 28 / DEF: 25 / ST: 27) Record: 4-12
30 St. Louis Rams down
It's time to completely overhaul this offensive line; the skill players are still talented, but the line keeps them from success. Also, the defense is awful. Previous: 28 (OFF: 29 / DEF: 24 / ST: 30)
    Record: 3-13
31 Miami Dolphins up
Draft Glenn Dorsey, get Ronnie Brown healthy and find Cam Cameron the phone number of Stan Van Gundy's therapist. Previous: 32 (OFF: 27 / DEF: 29 / ST: 23) Record: 1-15
32 San Francisco 49ers down
Replace everyone who isn't a running back, middle linebacker, cornerback, punter, or lineman named Marques Douglas. Previous: 31 (OFF: 32 / DEF: 26 / ST: 5) Record: 5-11

DVOA Explained

DVOA (Defense-adjusted Value Over Average) breaks down every single play of the season and compares each one to the NFL average based on situation, adjusted for strength of schedule. DVOA gives proper credit for moving the chains and understands that you can't throw a 30-yard bomb in the red zone. Offense, defense, and special teams are all analyzed separately, and plays can be separated by down, by direction, or in any number of other ways that show us each team's specific strengths and weaknesses.

DVOA ratings may come out looking very strange and completely different from conventional wisdom. However, over the past few years, DVOA has been a better predictor than wins or points when it comes to figuring out how many games a team will win the following year. The same is true when it comes to using early numbers to predict wins later in the season.

Standard disclaimer: This statistical formula is not a replacement for your own judgment, just a tool to use in analyzing performance. Also note that the DVOA ratings do not consider injuries, either in rating past games or in projecting future games.

Ratings after midseason will gradually drop the importance of earlier games to give a better picture of how teams are playing now.

If you want to know more about how the DVOA ratings are calculated, you can read about it on Football Outsiders. You can also find all the specific numbers we use to analyze the NFL, including the actual DVOA numbers.
