2008 NFL Draft
First-Round Picks

1 of 31

No. 1: Dolphins -- Jake Long, OT, Michigan
"This is Bill Parcells' pick, and Parcells knows whether Long succeeds or fails will go a long way toward defining his legacy." --
FanHouse Analysis | Video Analysis

No.TeamPlayerSchoolPos.
1. Dolphins Jake Long Michigan OT
FanHouse: So why did Parcells pick Long? Because he's unanimously considered the best offensive lineman in this year's draft, and Parcells wants to make quick fixes to turn around the 1-15 Dolphins. Details
2. Rams Chris Long Virginia DE
FanHouse: Long... is a much better athlete than he gets credit for; although he wasn't a workout wonder at the combine like Ohio State's Vernon Gholston, he's fast and explosive. He had 14 sacks as a senior. Details
3. Falcons Matt Ryan Boston College QB
FanHouse: Watching Ryan in college, I saw him make the throws that make NFL scouts drool, but I didn't see him make those throws nearly often enough. A guy who has a great arm only part of the time doesn't have a great arm at all. Details
4. Raiders Darren McFadden Arkansas RB
FanHouse: Even though he's going to a team with a bad offense, Arkansas running back Darren McFadden is my very early favorite to be the 2008 NFL Rookie of the Year... this is a special talent. Details
5. Chiefs Glenn Dorsey LSU DT
FanHouse: The fact is, the Kansas City Chiefs, who chose Dorsey fifth overall, just got a good football player, and a football player who will be healthy enough to go at full-speed right away. Details
6. Jets Vernon Gholston Ohio State DL
FanHouse: Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston is the No. 1 player on my draft board, the player I think will be the best professional of anyone drafted this weekend. Details
7. Saints (From
Pats via 49ers)
Sedrick Ellis USC DT
FanHouse: Sedrick Ellis is known as a great athlete and a guy with the character that makes him too good a person to be a Bengal, so it's a good thing that the Saints traded up before the Bengals could get their paws on him. Details
8. Jaguars
(From Ravens)
Derrick Harvey Florida DE
FanHouse: Harvey had 20.5 sacks.. and put together an impressive performance at the scouting combine... He'll be a big part of the Jaguars' plans to pressure Peyton Manning and finally move into the top spot in the AFC South. Details
9. Bengals Keith Rivers USC LB
FanHouse: Keith Rivers is an attractive choice because he can play in either the 3-4 or the 4-3, and on the strong side, the weak side or in the middle... This pick makes a lot of sense for both sides. Details
10. Patriots
(From Saints)
Jerod Mayo Tennessee LB
FanHouse: What teams like best about Mayo is his versatility; he can play the weak side, the strong side, or the middle. Details
11. Bills Leodis McKelvin Troy CB
FanHouse: Troy cornerback Leodis McKelvin was a dominant player at cornerback as a senior... I'm not totally sold on him, though... I certainly wouldn't have taken McKelvin this highly. Details
12. Broncos Ryan Clady Boise State OT
FanHouse: He could play comfortably at 335 pounds or so, and if he bulks up that high he can become an overpowering drive blocker in addition to his natural talents as a pass blocker. Details
13. Panthers Jonathan Stewart Oregon RB
FanHouse: No one questions whether Jonathan Stewart is good enough to make an impact as a rookie, but there are questions - and they grew louder this week - of whether he'll be healthy enough to contribute as a rookie. Details
14. Bears Chris Williams Vanderbilt OT
FanHouse: If what you're looking for is a guy who can step in and play left tackle immediately, Vanderbilt offensive tackle Chris Williams might be the best prospect in this year's draft. Details
15. Chiefs
(From Lions)
Branden Albert Virginia G/T
FanHouse: The only question about Branden Albert is whether he's a guard or a tackle in the NFL... the fact that the Chiefs would trade up for him strongly indicates that he'll be a tackle in the NFL. Details
16. Cardinals Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie Tennessee State CB
FanHouse: Cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie might have the highest upside of any player in this draft. He's an amazing athlete who dominated at the I-AA level and will be a very good player for the Cardinals. Details
17. Lions (Chiefs
via Vikes)
Gosder Cherilus Boston College OT
FanHouse: The bad news is that Boston College offensive tackle Gosder Cherilus is not a particularly impressive offensive lineman. Details
18. Ravens (From
Texans)
Joe Flacco Delaware QB
FanHouse: Delaware quarterback Joe Flacco is viewed by some as the quarterback with the best long-term potential of any in this draft. Details
19. Panthers (From
Eagles)
Jeff Otah Pittsburgh OT
FanHouse: Details
20. BuccaneersAqib Talib Kansas CB
FanHouse: Talib also has talent with the ball in his hands and has returned kicks and even played wide receiver. He should start from Day 1. Details
21. Falcons (From
Redskins)
Sam Baker USC OT
FanHouse: Before the 2007 college football season, USC offensive tackle Sam Baker was considered a potential Top 10 draft pick. Details
22. Cowboys
(From Browns)
Felix Jones Arkansas RB
FanHouse: Cowboys owner Jerry Jones wanted to add an Arkansas running back, and even if this isn't the Arkansas running back who would have been his first choice, Felix Jones will still make Jerry Jones happy. Details
23. SteelersRashard Mendenhall Illinois RB
FanHouse: Illinois running back Rashard Mendenhall is one of the most talented players on the board, and to get him with the 23rd pick represents great value for the Steelers. Details
24. TitansChris Johnson East Carolina RB
FanHouse: East Carolina running back Chris Johnson was the fastest player at this year's scouting combine, and he's one of the fastest players in the history of the combine. That's the good news. Details
25. Cowboys (via
Seahawks)
Mike Jenkins South Florida CB
FanHouse: There are some concerns, especially his 2007 arrest on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest without violence for an incident outside a bar in which police used a taser on him. But most accounts say Jenkins is a good guy, and there's no doubt that he's a good player. Details
26. Texans (Ravens
via Jaguars)
Duane Brown Virginia Tech OT
FanHouse: I know what you're thinking: Who's Duane Brown? He's a left tackle from Virginia Tech whom very, very few people thought would be a first-round draft pick. Details
27. Chargers Antoine Cason Arizona CB
FanHouse: The people who like Cason point to three things that make him worthy of being a first-round pick: He has good ball skills, he can return punts, and he's a high-character guy. Details
28. Seahawks (via
Cowboys)
Lawrence Jackson USC DE
FanHouse: USC defensive end Lawrence Jackson is a good pass rusher who had double-digit sacks as a senior and who had an impressive showing at the scouting combine, but I'm not a big fan of this selection. Details
29. 49ers
(From Colts)
Kentwan Balmer North Carolina DT
FanHouse: talked to North Carolina defensive end Kentwan Balmer at the scouting combine and came away liking him a lot, and I like the value of picking him with the 29th selection in the first round a lot. Details
30. Jets (via
Packers)
Dustin Keller Purdue TE
FanHouse: While Keller is a good athlete, I'm not a big fan of his because he's not a very good blocker. Details
31. Giants Kenny Phillips Miami S
FanHouse: Phillips is a good player, but his best season was his sophomore season, and a lot of analysts thought he had dropped out of the first round with a disappointing 2007 season. Details

I don't understand how Detroit picked Boston Colleges #77 Cheribus over #78 Ty Hall fro Boston College. Hall is alot quicker and devoted than Cheribus. Cheribus won't last 2 years. If Hall was chosen they could get 5-6 good years out of him.

Raiders came off with McFadden but they still suck. Can u say Barry Sanders. Keep on thinking that Eli and the Giants r not for real and I'll keep winning bets. Thank you for paying my rent for six months you suckers.......or should I say Patriot fans.

The dolphins passed on agreat player in Chris Long. He is fast, strong, and has a great blood line. He is going to be a beast in St. Louis. He has my pick to be rookie of the year and I hope he stays with his new team for a long time.
