The death of Brian "Crush" Adams on August 13 marked the seventh famous professional wrestler death of 2007 alone. It also marked the 24th time a renowned wrestler under the age of 50 has passed away since January 2000. To contrast that figure, only 23 died from 1990-1999 in total, regardless of age. It has already been a record-breaking decade for wrestler deaths.

Mainly because of the Chris Benoit case, the media coverage flood gates have opened and people are finally raising questions about the wrestler mortality chain. But many lifelong wrestling enthusiasts first started to take notice on April 20, 1999 - the day "Ravishing" Rick Rude died at the age of 40 as a result of heart failure.

An autopsy report showed Rude died of an overdose of "mixed medications," and there have been claims it was an overdose of Gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) and steroids. In 1994, he testified that he had used anabolic steroids to build muscle mass and relieve joint pain.

His tragedy really stood out at the time, not only because of his ties to drug use, but because he was such a popular figure in the world of professional wrestling. Since his death, many other well-known wrestlers have passed on at a young age.

And while drug use certainly hasn't been a contributing factor in every situation, the staggering list for this decade continues to grow...

  • Bobby Duncum, Jr (34) - 2000
    Drug overdose (prescription).
  • Yokozuna (34) - 2000

Predating all of this is the story of the Von Erik (Adkisson) family, which saw most of that family lose their lives while engaged in professional wrestling. David Von Eric was first. Died of a heart attack Feb, 1984. Brother Mike Von Erick took his own life with an overdose of Placidyl in 1987 following an extended illness. Brother Chris, too small for pro wrestling, also took his life, despondent in not being able to join his brothers. Brother Kerry shot and killed himself in Feb, 1993 after a conviction on drug possession. Finally, father Jack Adkisson, who wrestled as Fitz Von Erik, died from terminal brain cancer. His wife, blaming him for the death of 5 of her 6 sons had, by that time, left him.

sad to see them all go its inevitable when you carry that much weight around and do 20 minutes of extreme cardio then sit around all day with the pain killers steroids and anti inflammatories they use its no wonder they get as much time as they do

Why is Owen Hart even in this discussion? His death had nothing to do with drugs, it was a work accident. No different than a steel worker falling off a beam at a building site.

I love how main steam media is now only worried about this "problem" after Benoit flipped out and killed himself and family. Yes some on that list were no doubt drug related but not all. Yokozuna far from drugs just fat Earthquake fat(and by the way nice investigating that they don't post their real names) Chris Adams shot Mike awsome killed himself because his wife was leaving and Sherri died possibly from foul play so lets relax with these "enlightening" stories till you list ALL the facts

This comment should be purged for its profanity and homosexual slur. The comment is neither informative or accurate. Instead of giving the reader something factual in support of his opinion, sandmanboxing04, dishes the reader a generous helping of emotion. His emphatic use of profanity and a homosexual slur is not original nor does it successfully elevate the stature of his opinion to anything of substance.

I have to admit I am an avid WWE wrestling fan... I think its pretty sad to say that all these wrestlers that have passed away in the past either had a heart problem or drug overdose.. I would think that with them dying the way they did; this would be a wake up call to all present wrestlers and to them that use steroids be more proactive on the issues with steroid use and educate them. If that didn't work I would have the executives look iinto each and every case involving steroids. I would also have Congress involved but in a more active role than they did in the baseball steroid issue.
