MLB suspends Mariners slugger Sexson for 6 games

      Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) - Seattle slugger Richie Sexson was suspended for six games and fined Friday by Major League Baseball after charging the mound and throwing his helmet at a Texas pitcher the previous night.

Bob Watson, baseball's vice president in charge of discipline, cited Sexson for "violent and aggressive actions."

Sexson asked the players' association to appeal, and any suspension will be delayed until after a hearing.

Seattle's Felix Hernandez and Texas' Gerald Laird and Sidney Ponson also were fined.

Sexson charged the mound and flung his helmet at Rangers pitcher Kason Gabbard after the left-hander threw an eye-high pitch to him in the fourth inning of Seattle's 5-0 loss. While benches cleared, no punches were thrown. Sexson was ejected.

Tensions began to build in the top half when Hernandez hit Ian Kinsler, who had homered in the second, in the back with a fastball. Kinsler turned toward Hernandez, who put his arms out then stared at Kinsler as the second baseman walked to first.

When benches cleared, Hernandez was restrained by three players, including former Mariners closer Eddie Guardado, now with Texas.

Betancourt stands around and lets ground balls go past him - what is this crap about? What has happened to their morale and spirit? Will probably be MacLaren's first and LAST year

His suspension can't hurt the mariners because he couldn't be doing any worse and just about anybody they bring in to replace him will probably do better, but then the mariners couldn't be doing any worse - worst record in AL, worst rotatoin and relief pitching

I live here and sent my season tickets back, it took a long time to see that they will never be a team. The same goes for the Sonics. All we do is pay the tax for new facilities There is to much to do in Wash. Canada only one and half hours away, BC is excellent........

the texas pitcher was not even close to nuthead, it was just a high fastball. when u are sexson and u can't hit very well, and u are over the hill like rhoades, then u throw your helmet whenever because u really are a big BABY

Bob Watson, now some one should run his sorry ass outta baseball. In charge? He can't find himself with both hands, how is he going to be in-charge of anything. So, if he thinks it's okay for a pitcher to bean a batter and nothing is said, done -except to say, Now now boys.....He and MLB, are a sick bunch of overgrown 7th graders and especially the limp wrist, lethargic and all sissy'd up Marinerrrrrrrrs...Yea, and Woody was NY George's stooge and nobody caught on when he gutted the team in mid-90's. Mariners? Haw! Diva Dave Knee-hose? Haw! Nintendo? Haha. Hully up and send all money toTokyo...oh sooo solly

He is hardly a slugger. Mariner's are a gutless heartless bunch this year... with no fight in them...sad.
