Nearly All of Vick's Dogs Will Be Saved

(Oct. 2) - All but one of the dogs seized in the Michael Vick dog fighting case will be placed with families or put in a sanctuary where they will interact with people to overcome their fear and lack of socialization, according to court order filed Monday.

The Fate of the Dogs

Contractors with the U.S. Department of Agriculture evaluated the 49 canines seized in the Michael Vick case. One is to be put to death because it is too aggressive with humans, court records said. The others will go to families or to an animal sanctuary for socialization.

Michael Vick pleaded guilty in August to conspiracy charges related to dog fighting.

One of the 49 seized dogs "has a history biting humans" and will be euthanized, according to a motion filed in Virginia in U.S. District Court.

U.S. Attorney Chuck Rosenberg said the dog -- identified as number 2621 -- "exhibited intense aggression to humans to the point where the evaluation could not safely be completed."

The recommendation came more than a month after the court ordered the dogs evaluated by U.S. Department of Agriculture contractors.

Last month a team of animal behavior experts selected by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals analyzed the dogs, and then recommended whether they were best suited with families, trained as police dogs, placed in a sanctuary or euthanized.

Federal authorities anticipate recommending a guardian be appointed to oversee the placement of the other dogs.

Vick pleaded guilty in August to federal conspiracy charges related to dog fighting on his property in Surry County, Va. He is to be sentenced on the federal charges on Dec. 10.

Last month, a federal judge tightened restrictions on Vick after he tested positive for marijuana use. The suspended Atlanta Falcons player must submit to any method of drug testing required by the pretrial services officer or the supervising officer.

He must participate in substance abuse therapy and mental health counseling if the pretrial services officer or supervising officer orders that.

Vick was also ordered to stay home between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. He is to be electronically monitored during that time.

Vick also faces state charges related to dog fighting. He is to be arraigned on state charges Wednesday in a Virginia court.

Vic should go to jail for what he has done. the poor dogs have no voice in the matter. How can peole do such terrible things .dogs are the best friends to have and love.their is so much cruealty in this world. What would cause a person to be so cruel. Its all about money. If they would do that to dogs, god Help what else they do.

Good to see the dogs have a chance but need to be monitored because of their selective development for fighting purposes. Also good to see that Vick is being held accountable to actions he feigned as being acceptable to his growing up standards regarding dogs. Hope this plays out for sometime to discourage others from and maybe open the eyes up to others that embark on such maligned treatment of our most trusted companions> dogs; and to show that dogs should not be mistreated and bread for such horrendous purposes.

TReport This! i am sadden that these dogs will be going into homes or out into the public. i really love pits and everyday i stuggle with the public opinion about them. i work in an animal shelter. i'm sure these dogs love people, but i just can't believe that they are safe around other dogs or even managable around other dogs. i believe these dogs need to be put to sleep. as far as ceaser helping the one dog, please he would neven admit he can't help a dog. a few of the trainers i work with actually see clients that have gone to him and have to fix the problems which sometimes is not fixable. lets find homes for the dogs that do not have this history.

raymusicman? you are the stupid retard here. You seem to have a problem with compassion. Guess it's out of reach for you! You haven't the slightest clue that you can actually care for humans that are genuine and care for animals in distress......all at the same time ! ! ! Get a grip! ! Humans have more of a brain to make choices to be good or bad. Dogs are stuck with just those type of humans. Vicks dogs were unlucky to say the least and didn't deserve such a nasty owner. You are playing stupid? Your foul accusations are just that........ FOUL! And your playing stupid is just that...... STUPID.......ugh!
