    Who's Worst Play-By-Play Announcer?

    Posted: 2007-11-08 12:57:25
Have you had it with bad sports announcing? Are you still miffed that the "expert" calling your team's game both mispronounced one of your reserve's names and botched the score, all while making a bad pun? We feel your pain. And we're here to help. Using a field selected by AwfulAnnouncing.com, we've put together a fan-voting tournament that will determine the worst sports announcer in the biz. Read AwfulAnnouncing's breakdown, then vote for the announcers you think should advance (i.e., "stink the most").

PAM WARD (1) vs. THOM BRENNAMAN (8)
AwfulAnnouncing.com says: "Two of the lesser known play-by-players go head to head, and this one might end quickly. Brennaman should ride nepotism to an early exit from the tournament while Pam is still trying to figure out the score of the Michigan-Appalachian State game."

MIKE PATRICK (2) vs. KENNY ALBERT (7)
AwfulAnnouncing.com says: "Britney Spears knows who she's voting for in this one. Patrick inquired about her during overtime of the Georgia-Alabama game in September, but can name-dropping alone get him past Marv's son?"

DICK STOCKTON (3) vs. BRAD NESSLER (6)
AwfulAnnouncing.com says: "The oldest member of the tournament looks to take out Nessler, who snuck in at the last minute when Joe Buck was inexplicably added to the 'Best Announcers Tournament' (Billy Packer argued all week for the mid-major not to make it in, but to no avail). Don't let that fool you though. Nessler's booth partners (Paul Maguire and Bob Griese) have been training with him for this matchup so Stockton had better be prepared."

CHIP CARAY (4) vs. BRYANT GUMBEL (5)
AwfulAnnouncing.com says: "Caray just recently came into the national picture during this year's MLB playoffs on TBS, and might still be reciting 'Frank TV' promos in his sleep. He's up against the NFL Network's Bryant Gumbel, who's had more partners (Dick Vermeil, Chris Collinsworth, Deion Sanders, and Marshall Faulk) in one year than Al Michaels has had in his entire career. Can Gumbel's 'work' on HBO's Real Sports help him advance, or will he get bumped by our third nepotism-based entry?"

(First-round voting will conclude on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at which point the leader in each matchup will advance to the second round, with second-round voting concluding on Nov. 20, etc. The four bracket winners will then advance to a "Worst Announcer" semifinals to determine the overall winner. Also check out our "Best Sports Announcer" tournament, and vote for the best Play-By-Play Announcer, Analyst, Studio Host and Sideline Reporter.)

Poor Bryant Gumbel is totally out of his element. Perhaps he is the ass most people report, but he's decent in a TV studio. A bit grandiose and pompous, but I doubt that anyone either cares or even notices. However, you he can't escape a hot mike. Mistakes happen to the best sportscasters. But, when the entire game is riddled with cliches tossed out from high in his throat, and the game takes on the sound and feel of a high school football match from Small Town, America...surely someone on high notices. My backgound is Major Market broadcasting. Since the age of twenty. Certainly I can hear the amateur handling of an NFL broadcast, but even to the uninitiated Gumble is as transparent as a store front window. (cliche) I'll throw that one in for nothing. If Bryant is going to use them, at least he should provide some variety. I'm not sure he's the worst, but somebody has to be and I haven't heard a worse TV sportscaster. If I were the NFL, I'd get a "cease and desist" order a

Espn has ruined Monday night football. They talk to who ever drops by and ignore the game. It takes three guys to suck this bad? Wheres Howard Cosell when we need him

How about Steve Young? He sucks. He is right there in the top of the worst announcers. How about Boomer Esiason? Just terrible. He is a GEEK!!!!! Thank God they got rid of Michael Ervin. Get rid of Keyshawn Johnson. Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!
John Madden, Al Michaels, Chris Berman, Tom Jackson, Dan Marino, Brent Mossberger, Troy Aikman, Phil Simms, James Brown, Jimmy Johnson and Terry Bradshaw. This is the best of the bunch.

Tony Kornheiser is by far the worst analist . He and Dennis Miller are in the same league. I can't believe ESPN kept him for another year.

    mmanozzi 04:02:28 AM Dec 05 2007

John Madden........... being a coach does NOT make a good announcer.

The worst I have heard would have to be a tie between Billy Packer and Tim McCarver. Packer and McCarver come from the same cut of cloth, in that they have never aknowlegded the success of their respective teams...Packer being a former standout at Wake Forest and McCarver, a former catcher with the St. Louis Cardinals. Only real fans know of these associations. If I didn't know any better, Packer either wears tar Heel blue undies and McCarver walks around in Yankee pinstripes. And to top it off, their styles grate my nerves to no end. Blessed be the day when they decide to call it quits...and that day can't seem to come soon enough to suit me!!!
